Site, Dates announced for the 35/45/55 Women's Grass Courts

The USTA announced today that the USTA Category I Women's 35/45/55 Grass Court Championships will be held July 14-19 at the Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia, in conjunction with the 65/75/85 divisions.

Eight Americans Win Singles World Titles in 2007

Diane Fishburne, 50s; Brenda Carter, 60s, Dorothy Matthiessen, 70s and Mary Boswell, 75s, all won the world championships this year and each has finished #1 in the world in her respective age division.

In the men’s divisions, Val Wilder, 45s, Fred Drilling, 65s and Graydon Nichols, 80s likewise won the world championships this year and finished the year ranked #1 in the world. Herm Ahlers, men’s 70s was a finalist in the world championships and ended the year ranked #1 in the world. Dan Waldman, playing a limited schedule, won the 50 world championships but finished outside the top 5 in the rankings.

World Doubles Winners included Mike Fedderly/Wilder, men's 45; Neal Newman/Larry Turville, men's 55; Brian Cheney/Jimmy Parker, men's 60s; Gordon Davis, men's 70; George McCabe, men's 75; Mary Dailey, women's 35; Mary Dailey/Diane Fishburne, women's 45; Carolyn Nichols/Robin Harris, women's 50; Charleen Hillebrand/Suella Steel, women's 65; and Rita Price, women's 80.

Campbell's,The Tennis Channel, BMW, Diadora and Hawaiian Air Lines will present the 3nd annual USTA National Husband & Wife Senior Championships, March 10-15, 2008 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.

Teams in the 3 senior events qualify with a combined age of 100, combined age120 and combined age140 by December 31st 2008.

 

The events will be played on the grass courts used for the 2006 Davis Cup match and offers consolation matches in all divisions.

In addition to a dinner-dance, an exceptional gift bag, and special Diadora tournament shirt, competitors will receive a complementary grounds pass to the Pacific Life Open Wed March 7th.

 

Players will also receive a 25% discount, including food, drink and Spa services at the world class Citron Restaurant located in the Viceroy Boutique hotel in Palm Springs. The Black Angus Steakhouse who takes pride in serving only aged all-natural Black Angus Beef will offer players a $10 food discount for meals

 

Winners receive round trip tickets to Hawaii from Hawaiian Air lines and finalists a 3 day, 2 nights stay to the Fairfield Grand, Las Vegas.

The Tournament and, Steve and Abby Solomon will donate a minimum of $1,000 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and will match up to $1,500 in contributions.

HardCourts, FAther/Son, 40 Men & Women, Grandfather/Grandson

Manola Colter beat top seeded Ellie Hammargren to win her first 40s national, in La Jolla last month. She won the 35 hard courts the past two years.

Gretchen Magers/Kathy May Fritz beat surprise finalists Erika Smith/Alyssa Finerman (who beat the 2nd & 3rd seeds to reach the final).

Smith/Rick Kepler won the mixed over Fritz/Manuel Ortiz. The super hyper Kepler and hard hitting Smith pair together extremely well. They also won the mixed at the Marin Seniors.

Peter Smith won the 40 hard courts over Martin Barba. Barba avenged his Mission Hills loss to Curtis Dunn in the semis.

Arthur Hernandez/Ken Zanio took out the 2nd and top seeds en route to the title in the 40 doubles. They beat the top seeds, Smith/Paul Settles in the final.

The Joelsons beat the Rettenmaiers in the father/son final and the Matthews beat the Keplers in grandfather/grandson.
