30 november Eight of Nine US Teams in Final; Queens Cup Finishes SecondUSA has reached the final of eight of the nine cups contested in New Zealand, failing to reach the final only in the Alice Marble Cup (in which the USA was seeded 4), falling in the Marble Cup 2-1 to Germany on a bitterly cold day in New Zealand. Marble Cup: Betty Wachob played Inge from Germany at #2 singles and things were looking good when Betty roared to a 5-1 lead. Her opponent though started playing fearlessly, hitting deep and running beautifully, holding off 2 set points in her rally to take the set 75. Germany won the 2nd set 6-3 to go up 1-0. Brenda Carter started even better, winning the first set against Heide Orth. Heide though played better and better, finishing by taking the third set 61. Carol Clay/Judy Louie won the doubles point. 65s: The USA played Australia and won 3-0 behind the strong play of Cathie Anderson at #2 singles, Charlene Hillebrand at #1 singles and Anderson/Sinclair Bill in the doubles. Suella Steel caught the nasty cold that Char had earlier in the week and rested up for the final, which will be played against Great Britain. GBR narrowly defeated Australia, taking the doubles point 64 in the third to decide the tie. The USA women's 70s had the day off. The Queens Cup team played the final against last year's winners, Great Britain and lost 2-1. Lucille Kyvallos lost to World Champion Ruth 61 61 at #2 singles. Mary Boswell rallied from 1-3 down in the first set to beat Britain's #1 Rita Lauder. Ruth and Rita played Mary and Louise Russ and beat them in straight sets, using superior court positioning and movement. It was a fine week though for the USA team, which finished second, improving on their #4 finish last year and ended with a 4-1 record, an improvement on their 1-3 record in 2006. Britannia Cup: USA beat France 3-0. Alan Carter won at #2 singles in a routine straight set match. Fred Drilling played the lefty #1 and edged him 63 76. Rudy Hernando and Del Campbell won the doubles point 61 46 61 (and it was really really cold!). Crawford Cup: USA beat Great Britain 3-0. Herm Ahlers played a marathon match, losing more games but winning more sets than David Garman, 76 26 76. Bob Duesler won comfortably at #1 singles, beating Don Shears 61 63. Duesler/Gordon Davis won the doubles point over James Wood/Shears 60 75. Bitsy Grant Cup: USA had the day off. USA plays Canada and Lorne Main tomorrow. Gardnar Mulloy Cup: USA had the day off. 28 november Queen's Cup Through to Final in ChristchurchUSA Queens' Cup came roaring back after dropping the #2 singles match against Canada (to whom they lost 2x last year in Turkey, 2-1 both times). Mary Boswell played a tactically excellent match (and executed her tactics brilliantly) to beat Rosie Asch and then combined with Louise Russ, her Gold Slam doubles partner, to win the doubles 60 61. USA advanced to a Saturday final in the men's 75s and women's 70s at Hagley Park. The 75s won 2-1, bu the 70s won 3-0. The men's 70s also won 3-0 to advance to the semis. The Mulloy Cup team is already in the final on Saturday. The women's 65s team won 3-0 today in Ashburton. Both the men's and women's 65s play tomorrow. The USA women's 60s team plays Germany tomorrow in the last round robin match.
Thursday Midday UpdateHello from SUNNY Christchurch! I'm at Wilding Park today and the Marble Cup team beat Japan today, with Betty Wachob winning the #2 singles point and Brenda Carter playing a flawless match at #1 singles (great footwork). The same two are playing the doubles in anticipation of a tough match against Germany on Friday in the final RR match in the Marble Cup.
The Queens' Cup team dropped their first match today, to Canada. Louise Russ lost in 3 sets at #2 singles. Mary Boswell is warming up now to play Rosie Asch at #1 singles. I'll report on the outcome of that match soon.
The men's 70s, women's 70s and men's 75s are playing at Hagley park on grass.
I'll update this again later.
Last night there was a nice dinner party, lots of good food and not too many speeches, but the ones we had were fine.
USA Teams Stay on Course in NZUSA remains in contention in all divisions as of Wed night. Del Campbell and Fred Drilling won in singles in the Britannia Cup in Ashurton and Rudy Hernando/Alan Carter won the doubles point. Dori deVries played for over 3 hours vs Gr Britain today...Dorothy Matthiessen played under an hour at #1 singles, both won and Roz King/Burnett Herrick won again and again had to go 3 sets (played a match tiebreaker actually after splitting...yesterday this dynamic duo played to 76 in the third) Chuck Devoe at #2 and George McCabe at #1 made short work of the Bitsy Grant Brits and Tom Springer/Marvin Brown finished the sweep with a convincing doubles win. Chuck was planning on some doubles practice actually, since they have a tough match against Japan tomorrow in their final RR match. The men's 70s won, playing Gordon Davis at 2, and Herm Ahlers at 1 against Canada, who was missing their #1 player due to injury. Both Canadians played well especially in the first set but fell in straight sets. Ahlers/Bob Duesler won the doubles points. Jim Nelson had to return to the states due to a family emergency. Graydon Nichols at #1 and Tony Franco at #2 beat their Swedish opponents; Bill Tully/Roald Flater won the doubles point. Queens' Cup won both singles points and then their opponents def'd the doubles, since they had a deciding doubles match from the previous day to complete...rain had halted the tie at one match apiece. The 60s won and play top seeds, Germany tomorrow in the Alice Marble Cup. The men's 60s also won though Michael Beautyman at #2 singles had a very long match against a seasoned opponent who had wins in his prime over Stan Smith and Eric Van Dillen and Cliff Ritchey. It was another really cold day, tomorrow should be better. 26 november USA Beats the Rain in Christchurch, and OpponentsBRRRRR! 24 november Greetings from ChristchurchHello from Christchurch, NZ. The American teams arrived here, seven in all (two are playing in Ashburton). Opening ceremonies are tonight. Many of the teams were out twice practicing (Mary Boswell had the 75 women on a 2 a day schedule and I heard no complaints; the men's 60s, with Brian Cheney were also out practicing twice). Brenda Carter instead had the 60s up early for a single three hour session (on the hard courts). Brian said that while he was waiting for his plane in Arizona, he asked a senior lady to watch his racquets for a minute and when he came back he explained why he was traveling with so many racquets and she made the comment that it must be something that was for men, that women wouldn't be competitive enough to do this. She embellished that comment and Brian said nothing for a minute, just thinking that she made that comment to the wrong guy! (Brian's mother of course is Dodo Cheney who is extremely competitive and has won about 350 national titles and is a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.) Driving here is on the left side of the road. The driver's seat is on the right. The turn signal is on the right. The window shield wipers are on the left side of the steering wheel. They work very well. It hasn't rained here. I gave someone a ride back from the airport yesterday. I think she thought it was more of an adventure than she wanted, but I'm only turning on the windshield wipers now occasionally. The venues are quite a ways apart, a car is very convenient. After the captains' meetings this afternoon there will be more to report. 21 november Photos of NorCal Teams, Intersectionals20 november Intersectionals, Sunday the 18thClick here to see which players participated. 19 november Hattie Somerville Inducted into USTA Hawaii Hall of Fame!USTA Hawaii Pacific Section Announces Annual Award Winners Former University of Hawai'i tennis coach Jim Schwitters and Hattie Somerville were inducted into the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section Tennis Hall of Fame at the USTA/HPS Annual Awards Banquet October 6, 2007 at the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii. Special guest speakers at the dinner included US Open Champion, Tracy Austin, nationally-acclaimed Stanford University Tennis Coach, Dick Gould and USTA board member and former New York Mayor, David Dinkins. Special entertainment was provided by Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, Brittni Paiwa. Somerville, 73, was inducted in the Player Category. Somerville is an avid tournament player, stringing together a record number of sectional age-group rankings during the past 40 years. She also competes and has held many national rankings. One of the playing records that Somerville is most proud of, is the three National Senior Mother-Daughter Grass Court Championships that she has won with her youngest daughter, Betsy Somerville Purpura. Schwitters, 70, coached the UH tennis teams for nearly 38 years. When he retired in 2003 he had a combined record of 1,312-598-15, making him the winningest coach in the NCAA Division I history. Although Schwitters was inducted in the Non-Player category, he is a regular at Diamond Tennis Center and has been ranked No. 1 in his age group nearly every year since 1974, and has held more than 20 national rankings. 17 november Intersectionals, Saturday updateSouthern lost in a tight match today to SoCal and Florida beat Texas in the 35s. Southern beat Texas in the semis. NorCal beat Texas 3/2 to place third.

45s: Florida/Southern in the final; Florida beat NorCal in the semis.
35s: SoCal beat NorCal on Friday to get to the semis.
I'm not in Florida...thanks to Greta Watson, Carol Clay and Carolyn Wei for the updates. 10 november Men's 35 Clay CourtsAndy Lake handed Oren Motevassel a rare loss in the final of the 35 clay courts. He also won the doubles, with Kline Sack, beating Disbergen/Schlorf in the final. Motevassel won the 35 hard courts in April over Lake. Lake won a gold slam in the 30s a few years back.
Fall Grandes DamesThe weather cleared up in Winter Park after Thursday and by Sunday, a beautiful day, the rain was a distant memory.
Trish Riddell showed she can multitask with the best of that breed, running a college tournament, inputting the results from this tournament and updating the website and winning the singles (over Jean Schalk) and doubles (with Mary Dailey, over Schalk and Cathy Farrell). Schalk, who was playing her 2nd tournament after a 25 year hiatus from tournament play, improved with each match, but Riddell was too tough in the final.
Susan Boyer played near errorless tennis in the 45s final to beat Carolyn Nichols in 3 sets 63 16 64. (4.5 hours...3 matches started and finished while we were playing and a 4th match was in progress at the conclusion of the match). Boyer/Nichols then combined to win the doubles over surprise finalists Carla Brown/Jan Kirkland-Cochran. Carla and Jan bested Susie Brown and Cindy LePrevost the day before in 3 sets. Brown also played a tough match against Nichols in the semis.
Cindy Babb used her slice to good advantage (those Gamma Balls!) in upsetting Carol Clay in the quarters. She rebounded from 2-5 in the 2nd set to win 76 75. She played top seed Liz Leigh tough in the semis for a set, before running out of gas 76 60. Second seeded Sue Bramlette had a tough quarter, but edged Ellen Goodman in 3 sets before falling to Kerry Young in the semis 61 76. Bramlette beat Babb to place 3rd. Kerry played great in the final, beating Leigh in straight sets to win her first singles title in a while.
Bramlette-Leprevost cruised to the doubles final, beating Brown/Kirkland-Cochran in the final. Brown-KC upset the 2nd seeds, Margie Cooper/Young in the semis.
Ria Graham beat surprise finalist Joan Nevins (who upset Nancy Reed in the semis) to win the 65s.
Graham/Sue Martin beat Reed/Ann Moore to win the 65 doubles.
Nancy Miles hosted the player party at her lovely home.
01 november Fall Grandes DamesHello from rainy Florida.
I overheard one player comment that she could tell anyone who asked her what she did today and she could answer, "played tennis from 10:30 to 6". In that time she didn't finish a doubles match, as the rains came around 11 and finally came for the last time at 6pm, washing away most of the play today, though all the singles matches were completed. Among the winners were Cindy Babb, Susie Peiffer (55s) Teragne Yohannes (45s) and Louise Russ (75s).
