San Isidro, Buenos Aires 2008, Finals

The tournament finished for me today, and I won the 50s, beating Beatrice Villaverde (who beat the #2 seed, Fritelli, 60 60 yesterday...Fritelli is ranked in the top 10 of the 50s by the ITF too.). I beat Villaverde 62 61. It was windy again today, which probably helped me, since not too much clay got into my eyes today. It was nice and warm today too.

Vasconcellas, who beat Vesna McKenna yesterday, won the 40s today, 67 62 61...

Heide Orth won the 60s and in so doing she won her fourth grade 1 tournament in the 60s for the year, and will end the year ranked #1 in both the 60s and 65s, quite a feat, even for the ageless Heide.

Nanda Fischer won the 65s, 62 62 in the final.

Isabelle Gemmel won the 35s, beating a very good player, the #2 seed, 64 61 in the final. She was just too consistent for her opponent.

Peter Nader won the 70s, dropping only a game in the final, his second win in two weeks by the same score. He's off next week to Uruguay, his fourth tournament in as many weeks, as he and his wife are on a So American tour to celebrate his 70th birthday.

I'm off now to the unicenter, one of the biggest shopping areas in Buenos Aires...apparently it's open till 10pm every day...then tomorrow off to the city of Buenos Aires for two days. I'll post some more photos later today or probably tomorrow morning.

San Isidro, Buenos Aires 2008: Friday

Hello again from Argentina.

Vesna McKenna had a knock-down drag-out match today against last year's winner, Vasconcellas, from Brazil, a former tour player. Vesna won the first set, rallying from 3-5 down to win the first set. I had to leave when Vesna was serving at 3-4, 2nd set, to play my match. The set ended up in  a tiebreaker and Vesna led 6-4, but Vasconcellas rallied to win the set and force a third. There were a lot of Brazilians there cheering on their compatriot. Vesna went up 4-1 in the third and then Vasconcellas, who had been nursing a calf strain all week, called for a trainer (basically she was tired)...it worked, she won the next 2 games, but Vesna managed to win the next game. However, Vasconcellas rallied to win the third set 7-5. She's a very good player as is McKenna...from what I saw, it was an excellent match and both played very well, very aggressively. The match lasted over 3 hours.

I played Marcella DeGregorio from Argentina and won 61 60, but it was a bit closer than that, lots of long rallies (but I did come to net some which made the difference), match lasted about 90 minutes I think. I play in the final Beatrice Villaverde who beat the #2 seed 60 60 (they seeded based on Argentinian rankings...except I guess for me, and there were a lot of upsets). Villaverde is a very complete player, and the final will be tough.

Vesna and I lost our doubles, she was tired, I had problems with sand in my eyes (and lost my dark glasses)...and our opponents played really well, one is in the 45 singles final and the 2 of them play a lot together.

Heide Orth is going for the top 60s ranking tomorrow...if she wins she'll end the year #1 in the world in teh 65s and 60s. She's playing very well.

Nanda Fischer is in the 65s final. She won easily today.

Isabelle Gemmel is in the 35s final tomorrow and we're both playing at 11, so will warm up together tomorrow and give Vesna a day of rest!

Peter Nader from Austria is in the men's 70 final.

It was another warm, sunny, breezy day here. After tomorrow, I hope to site see more.

San Isidro, Buenos Aires Tournament

I finally played singles today and it was a tough match, though I won 61 62 it took nearly 2 hours, she was really steady and ran well....and it's red clay...hard to put the ball away except by dropshotting I think. It could have been closer, she was up game point in a lot of games I won. She was cramping though by the end nad it was warm but not hot. It wasn't so windy today either. Here's a link to the 50 singles draw.

Vesna and I won our doubles yesterday, so we are in the semis of singles and doubles tomorrow. Here's a link to the 40 doubles draw.

Vesna plays the defending champion and top seed, Vasconcellas, tomorrow. She's a very good player but has a calf injury, but is good enough to control the court so far even without 100% movement. She also has a good serve so starts the points out well. Vesna is playing well and should have a great match tomorrow.  Here's a link to the 40s singles draw.

I'll take some photos tomorrow or more likely on Saturday of the Club Nautico San Isidro...it's a golf, yacht and tennis club and is on the Rio de la Plata, the widest river in the world. It goes between Argentina and Uruguay. It also looks very choppy this time of year (don't go boating on it if you get seasick...means I won't be sailing on it). To see photos, click here.

After not playing much the first 3 days, only one doubles match, they now have me scheduled for noon and three tomorrow...after saying it would be a ten am match. The scheduling is interesting here.

Buenos Aires/San Isidro Tournament

Hello from San Isisdro in the state of Buenos Aires, in Argentina. I'm here for the San Isisdro tournament, a Grade I ITF tournament.

I arrived here yesterday from San Antonio, and walked to the club (about a 30 min walk) to meet with Vesna McKenna with whom I'm playing doubles. She had already played and won her first round match. We booked a practice court and saw that the players on it were Heide Orth and Isabelle Gemmel (from the ITF) who were playing in the tournament, so we shared the court. The space behind the baseline was short on the practice courts and Vesna (and I) were pushing each other into the fence when hitting downwind. The courts here have less topping then Turkey, so are a bit faster and the balls are Prince heavy duty so are lighter than Volkl balls. It's still slow though.

Vesna won her 2nd round today and is in the semis...to be played on Friday. Plenty of time to rest up. She beat a good lefty today from Argentina 76 64 under very windy (it is spring) conditions.

I finally figured out how to get the draws and looked at my draw...the seedings seem very random, not based on ITF rankings and definitely not based on head to head results, since Gregario has wins over the #2 seed (3,1) and other seeds in the draw.

We play doubles tomorrow at high noon. I play singles Thursday, but my opponent played a 3 set match today and then has a day off...interesting (and not very fair) scheduling.

Here is a link to the draws and results.

Remember that in other countries, the date is day/month/year (eg November 18th is 18/11/08)

Click on "cuadros" to find the draws and on "programacion/reultados" for the results and the next day's time of play.

Intersectionals, Sunday

NorCal 45s finished third, beating arch-rival Southern California 4-1. I beat Tracey Thompson 62 64; Shelly Scott beat Robin Harris 62 75 and Judy Newman Rakela played the marathon match of the day, edging Cherise Meoli 26 62 63 in over three hours...lots of extremely long rallies and grueling points in that match, and the sun was wicked on one side of the court, so it was hard to come to net on that end for much of the match. Judy hit a net cord dribbler to forge a 53 lead in the third set...then went up 40-15, only to watch Cherise hit a net cord winner to save the first match point. However, 10 minutes later, Judy sealed the win for herself and the team. SoCal's Thompson/Harris won at #1 doubles and SoCal didn't play the #2 doubles.

NorCal 35s finished fifth, blitzing Florida 5-0. Carolyn Wei beat Marta Garzon 62 63; Mai Ichikawa only lost a game against Steline Disbergen and Catherine Vowles outlasted Suzanne Siegler, displaying newfound patience and a big serve in the win. Ichikawa/Wei beat Tracy Viebrock/Disbergen and Scott/Chris Ramsower-Pearlstein beat Teri Mejides/Siegler.

In the action you really wanted to know about, Texas 45s were playing Southern 45s when we left, the doubles was about 15 minutes away from starting. Southern won at #2 (Mariana Hollman beat Kathy Vick)and #1 singles (Fran Chandler beat Shelly Works), but Vicky Buholz outlasted Sue Bartlett at #3 singles (Sue cramped in the third and had to retire). So I don't know who won the tie.

The SoCal 35s were also up 2-1 after the singles over Southern. SoCal won at #1 and #2 singles, but Taylor Taylor, playing at #3, rallied from a set and 51 down against Cammy MacGregor to win the match.

Saturday

Home team Texas 45s smoked NorCal 5-0, not losing a set and going 2-0 in tiebreakers to beat the #2 seeds. They take on Southern tomorrow. NorCal plays SoCal in an intrastate battle.

NorCal 35s beat New England 4-1 to put them in a 5/6 playoff with Florida.

Southern 35s upset #2 seeds Texas, who were playing without their #1 player Julie Cass. Texas still took 2 of the 3 singles matches, but Southern won both doubles points. They play SoCal for the title tomorrow.

More tomorrow, too late tonight.

Intersectionals Friday

NorCal 45s had the day off, except for Erika Smith, who was battling at #1 doubles with Mai Ichikawa in the 35s when we left. NorCal lost to Southern today in the 35s, Southern won all 3 singles. We had the day off, NorCal 45s. More later...

Ok, it's later. Erika and Mai, NorCal lost to the Southern 35s team of Rachel Gale and Paula Juels-Jones 76 76. The NorCal players served twice for the first set and had a one break 5-2 lead in the second, but Gale and Jones were extremely tough in tight situations.

In the 45s, SoCal, seeded 4, took on Florida, who would have been the next seed. It was a tough match. Joanne Russell mixed up her shots and aggressively...drop shotted Tracy Thompson to win at #1 singles 62 64, hitting dropshot/lob combos to win the final 3 points of the match. Robin Harris took on Sue Rasmussen, in a battle of "lack of singles practice" players. Robin won in three sets.... Sue took the first set. Mary Dailey, the singles player, won her singles match for the 2nd straight day, beating Colleen Ferrell 62 64. Florida looked poised to clinch the match when Russell/Dailey went up 41 against Thompson/Harris, but the SoCal players rallied to win the match in three tight sets and clinch the SoCal win, since Cherise Mejoili and Ferrell beat Rasmussen/Terri Thompson to level the match earlier on. SoCal takes on Southern tomorrow and NorCal faces Texas. The weather is going to be dreadful, extremely windy.

Intersectionals, Thursday

Congratulations to the Southern 55s and Southern California 65s (who have won this event at least 7 times in a row) for their wins at intersectionals, and to the runner-up Texas 55s and Eastern 65s for their fine performances.

A big congratulations to the Margaret Russo recipient this year, Brenda Carter...a truly fine sportswoman on and off the court. Margaret must be smiling about this selection. The honor rendered Brenda nearly speechless, which anyone who knows her might find amazing.

Photos have been posted at www.carolynnichols.com from tonight's dinner.

A big thank you to the San Antonio team, led by Larry Eichenbaum for all their very hard work in putting together a great event.

Intersectionals, Thursday

Hello again from San Antonio.

NorCal 35 and 45 won today. The 35s borrowed several players from the 45s team (borrowing some good tennis shots and wisdom), Erika Smith successfully hit a backhand dropshot in competition, Shelly Stillman Scott angled her doubles opponents to death...in other words, business as usual.

In 45s, Carolyn Nichols, Shelly SS and Judy Newman Rakela won in singles; Pam Cooke/Debbie Croft and Shelly SS/Judy NR won the doubles point. Erika Smith and Chris Ramsower Pearlstein were loaned to the 35s (fee to be negotiated later, probably driving directions from Chrissie),  played 35 singles at 2, and 3 and won in straight sets (at 8am).

Mai Ichikawa ran into a backboard at #1 singles and lost in 3 sets but combined with Erika to clinch the 35s win. Chrissie Costamagna and Catherine Vowles won at #2 doubles, rallying from 25 down to win the first set.

The 45s are off tomorrow, and play Southern.

Florida won their 35s and 45s. Mary Dailey played singles and won against Eastern.

Off now to the banquet.
