25 februari Top Seeds Prevail in Singles at Spring Grandes DamesThere were a lot of upsets at the Spring Grandes Dames, but in the end the top seeds prevailed in every event except the 70 doubles...and the top seeds there reached the final only to lose in three sets in the final. Trish Riddel dominated the 30s at the Spring Grandes Dames in Heathrow, FL, winning the singles and doubles (with Mary Dailey) in convincing fashion. Dailey doubled as well, taking the 40 doubles title with Diane Fishburne...who also doubled by cruising to the 50 singles title. Dailey/Fishburne beat Sue Rasmussen/Robin Keener in the doubles final 64 63. Renata Marcinkowska returned to tournament play after nearly a year away and won the 40 singles over Stacey Williams. Williams celebrated her birthday Saturday though by scoring her first ever win over Robin Keener, always a tough competitor. Keener responded by double bageling Suzanne Siegler in the 3/4 playoff, not an easy task given Siegler's steadiness. Donna Drosner/Debbie Burgess won the 50 doubles title, though unseeded, and Drosner was a singles finalist. Drosner upset 2nd seeded Frances O'Sullivan in 3 sets, as well as Mary Morgan, also in 3 sets, to reach the singles final. Nancy Szen upset Debbie Burgess in the semis before falling to Fishburne in the semis. Brenda Carter won the 60 singles and doubles (with Trish Faulkner), and has yet to lose a 60s match in the USA. She beat Betty Wachob in the final in 3 sets in a repeat of the BallenIsles final. Wachob beat Judy Louie in the semis for the 2nd straight tournament. Louie placed third with a 64 64 win over Jan Dennis. Carter/Faulkner beat Louie/Wachob in the doubles final. Dori deVries won the 70s singles over a very tough field. She went 3 sets with Lyn Tietz in the quarters, and had a tough 2nd set with Roz King in the semis before finding her stride against Boots Van Nostrand in the final (62 64). King was trailing her doubles partner, Mary Boswell 46 35 when Boswell retired, in the quarters. Nancy Reed lobbed Kathy Langer in the quarters, beating her in 3 sets before falling 1,3 to Boots in the semis. Reed rebounded to oust King in the 3/4 75 in the third, a hard fought win. Kathy Langer/Lyn Tietz won the 70 doubles the hard way, beating the 2 top seeds, Boswell/King and deVries Gunderson, to earn their win. Mary Ginnard literally was knocked out of the 55s today. She was playing the quarters against Peggy Machoian and ran for a wide ball to her forehand and hit the fence post and was knocked unconscious. Peggy said she got the shot back (before hitting the fence) and Peggy, focusing on the ball didn't notice till after the point ended (Mary won it with her great get) that Mary was not moving...she thought Mary was stuck in the fence. Mary though appeared to be ok later, at least she declined going to the hospital. Peggy has Kerry Young next. Kerry played a good match to beat Carol Clay, the 4th seed. Carol and Carol's dad both commented on Kerry's deadly dropshot.
Sue Bramlette and Liz Leigh played a marathon singles match...Liz won 63 in the third. Next up for Liz...Anne Guerrant. Liz is playing doubles with Kathy Keating who is proving to be a good substitute for Janet Harpold who was ill and couldn't play. The two upset the third seeds, Jan Kirland-Cochran and Carla Brown 62 61. They play Cooper/Young in the semis tomorrow. Clay/Goodwin took out the team, Hoshiyama/Kagaya that edged Fales/Louie in a dramatic match (the final sets were tiebreakers and Fales/Louie had triple match point) on Thursday night. Clay/Goodwin won 62 61. The take on Leprevost/Bramlette next.
The 45s went true to form with all 4 seeds reaching the singles semis where the top 2 seeds, Hollman & Chandler played nearly perfectly to reach the final...should be a great match tomorrow. The top 2 seeds reached the final of the doubles as well.
The 65s had several upsets. Grace Woo, seeded 2, fell to Heidi Attelfellner (1,3) in the round of 16. Heidi also won today and faces Dori deVries in the semis. Dori took out Retsy Wilson in a cleverly played match today. Retsy beat Ria Graham in the quarters. On the other half it's the Italian and world #6, Maria Luisa Tinelli (who upset Sheila Weinstock today in straight sets) and Suella Steel.
In the 65 doubles, Wasser/Weiss, reunited as a team this week, took out the 3rd seeds, Graham/Sue Martin and play Steel/Weinstock in the semis. deVries/Wood play Gunderson/Wilson (who beat Plante/Reed 60 60 today).
Mary Boswell is making her 75s debut this week. She is in the semis against Jane Lutz, who edged her doubles partner, Louise Owen, in 3 sets today. Rosie Asch of Canada plays Louise Russ in the other semi, in a reprisal of last year's final.
There were no upsets in the doubles in the 75s.
Dodo and Mildred Southern have reached the 85s final. Loucille Scoggins gave Dodo a battle before falling 62 75. Mildred was impressive in beating Mary Mentzer 62 61.
Congratulations to Mary Boswell for winning the Sportsmanship award here!
