4月29日 Dubler Cup, Correction, USA Finishes 3rdITF Artice on final day action: http://www.itftennis.com/seniors/news/newsarticle.asp?id=17502
USA beat France yesterday in the Dubler Cup to finish third.
USA lost to France 2-0 yesterday in the Italia Cup. Kline Sacks nearly pulled out the #2 singles match, losing 7-5 in the third after leading 5-3 in the third.
Overall USA won 2 cups, finished 2nd in 2 Cups, 3rd in 2 cups, 4th in one, 5th in two and 10th in the Italia Cup, men's 35s.
Today play began in the individual world championships, and opening ceremonies took place, marred by a heavy thunderstorm just after the players marched into the center court stadium.
Robert Van Malden, who resides in NorCal but is Belgian, won his opening match, which is all I know so far.
There are however many US players amongst the seeds, including Willie Dann, men's 35s, Mario Tabares and Curis Dunn, men's 40s; Val Wilder, Egan Adams and Mike Fedderly, who are 1, 2, 3 in the men's 45s, plus John Chatlak at #5; Ross Persons and Dan Waldman in the men's 50s; Larry Turville, Bob Litwin and Phil Landauer in the men's 55s; Myke Bodisch in the women's 45s, Diane Fishburne, Susan Wright and Carolyn Nichols, 1, 2, 3 in the 50s and Ching Ling Chang in the women's 55s. Doubles closes tomorrow. 4月28日 Story from TurkeyEllen Markowitz had an adventure on her teams’ day off, going to Alanya yesterday. She saw lots of houses with wares displayed outside on the way and decided to stop and look at the rugs and tapestries. She ended up talking to the people, buying some carpets, drinking tea and exchanging email addresses. She also bought this hat which she is shown in…as did her teammates. They wore them around all day, and noticed a lot of smiles. Finally, when the entire team wore them to dinner, someone told them that this hat is something a boy wears after he’s circumcised at age 13! It obviously didn’t deter her from wearing it all day today though. Friday and Saturday Results: USA Wins Two CupsUSA won two cups this year in the seniors division, the women's 50, Maria Bueno Cup and 55, the Alice Marble Cup.
Italia Cup, men's 35s won on Friday and today played the 9/10 place playoff.
Trabert Cup, men's 40s lost both singles yesterday to France and today to Great Britain. They finished 4th.
Dubler Cup, men's 45s, lost yesterday and today to finish 4th.
Fred Perry Cup, men's 50s, won yesterday 2-1, beating Spain, with Ross Persons pulling out a 3 hour plus match at #2 singles; Sal Castillo lost at #1 singles in straight sets but Sal and Ross won the doubles in straight sets to put the team in the final. There Persons was beaten badly at #2 singles, but Sal won at #1 singles, sending them down to the deciding doubles match. There France won the dou bles in straight sets to win the Perry Cup. USA finished 2nd.
Austria Cup, men's 55s, reached the final but lost 2-1 in the final at Belek. Armistead Neely won at #2 singles, Larry Turville lost soundly at #1 singles, and Landauer/Newman lost the doubles. USA finished 2nd.
Women's 35s, Suzanne Lenglen Cup: USA finished 5th, beating South Africa today, taking both singles points, with Jessica Schlotterback playing #2 and Julie Cass #1 singles. Spain won the Lenglen Cup.
Women's 40s, Young Cup, also won today, beating Great Britain. They also finished 5th. France won the Lenglen Cup
Women's 45s, Court Cup, beat Great Britain 2-1 to finish third. Myke Bodisch lost at #2 singles to Christine French, Fran Chandler beat Anthea Stuart and Mary Dailey/Susan Love took the doubles point. France won the Court Cup.
Women's 50s, Bueno Cup. USA WON!!!! Susan Wright made it interesting at #2 singles, dropping the first 13 points of the match before her feet started moving against Lyn Mortimer of Australia. She then forged a 5-4 lead in the set before dropping it 7-5. Wright won the second set 6-2 as her opponent erred more and Susan was more aggressive. The play in the third set was very good. Australia led 5-3, 30-0 on Susan's serve, one break of serve, then Susan played several aggressive points and won that game (Australia didn't lose the game, Susan just raised her game). There were several more close games, but Susan won them all to close out the win 57 62 75. Whew! We knew at that point that our chances were very good of winning the cup as the Ace Player, Diane Fishburne was up next. She played as we expected, without mercy, and beat the Aussie #2, Paula Bongetti, 61 61 to win the Cup for the USA. Robin Harris/Carolyn Nichols completed the sweep, beating Bongetti/Kerry Young 62 61.
Women's 55s, Connolly Cup: USA WON!!!! USA beat Netherlands 2-1 in the final. Ginnard started the USA off well with a decisive win at #2 singles. Tina Karwasky scored a straight set win over Nora Blom at #1 singles to win the cup. Blom and her teammate beat Kathy Bennett/Kathy Barnes in 3 sets to win the doubles point, and Bennett was sore all over from a tumble she took during that match.
The weather was fine today and so was the play. Bill Kellogg the USA's ITF seniors representative, arrived to see the final day of play, as did several other players who had arrived for the world championships, such as Steve Cornell, Ching Ling Chang, Toni Novack and a few others.
The center court stands were filled for one of the deciding Cup matches today and the atmosphere at some of the matches was electric, lots of chanting going on, and patriotism, but all in good spirit. It's a special atmosphere.
The world championships, inidividual begin tomorrow. The draws should be posted now at www.92computing.com (go to current CAT tournaments).
4月26日 Thursday UpdateITF article on Wednesday results: http://www.itftennis.com/seniors/news/newsarticle.asp?id=17496
Thursday Results of American Teams
Italia Cup: USA beat Russia 2=1. The top Russian player, Cherkosov (sp?) took out Juan Carlos Parker with the loss of only a game, but Curtis Dunn won the #2 singles point and Willie Dann/Kline Sacks gutted out the doubles point. They play for 9th today or tomorrow.
Trabert and Austria Cups, men's 40 and 55 had the day off as did the Bueno Cup, women's 50s.
Dubler Cup beat Ireland at Belek to reach the semis.
The Perry Cup, men's 50s, beat Austria, who were a bit worn out by just winning their round robin division. Ross Persons won the #2 point, Sal Castillo cruised at #1 singles and Chris Bennett/Tom Smith won the doubles point. USA takes on top seeded Spain today, but are optimistic about their chances.
The Lenglen Cup lost to Germany 3=0. Germany, who were not in So Africa, were very strong and dropped only a set in the 3 matches, as Julie Cass took the 2nd set at #1 singles.
The Young Cup beat Belgium 2=1. Hollman took the #2 singles point, but the Belgium #1, who has won several world titles, beat Magers at #1 singles. Hollman/Magers took the doubles point to advance to the 5/6 playoff.
The Court Cup lost to the #3 seeded France 2=1. Myke Bodisch won at #2 singles; Catherine Suire of France took out Fran Chandler in straight sets at #1 singles, and Mary Dailey/Susan Love lost the doubles in 3 sets. Diane Fishburne, Susan Wright and Robin Harris from the 50s team had an adventure driving from Manavgat to Belek to watch the Court Cup play. They rented a car, a stick. Diane drove but couldn't find the reverse gear (it was different than on an American car...some lever needed to be pulled out which they discovered later). So Susan and Robin had to push Diane out of the parking space. They made it to Belek without incident, but then were told the had to park between 2 trees...knowing they couldn't make minor adjustments (still hadnt' figured out the reverse)...anyway, Susan and Robin got out and pushed the car when Diane needed to reverse and they parked, and watched the match...then came the time to get gas. The car was rented on empty and they were told to bring it back empty. Gas was about $2 a liter (quart)...they decided to buy $3 of gas. It took they said 4 people to figure out what they wanted. Oh, and by that time they had found out how to reverse the car without getting out and pushing it.
The gala dinner was last night, which was like a normal dinner but with more music and shrimp for dinner.
The women's 55s beat Switzerland easily yesterday and play Great Britain today.
Carolyn World Championships, Wed UpdateFor info on Tuessday's results on the ITF website, and an article, click here: http://www.itftennis.com/seniors/news/newsarticle.asp?id=17492
The Italia Cup lost to So Africa. Willie Dann had a close match at #2 singles, losing 76 76, after serving for both sets. Juan Carlos Parker lost at #1 singles after rolling over on his ankle. They have another tough match today.
The men's 40s, Trabert Cup won 3=0 and after an off day today play the winner of a match, possible France, tomorrow.
The men's 50s, Perry Cup, won 3=0 today and play again today.
The men's 45s, Dubler Cup split their singles and the tie came down to doubles. The USA won the first set and that's all I heard but I assume they won.
The women's 35s, Lenglen Cup had the day off and play a very tough German team today. They rested up for it yesterday in lieu of sight seeing.
The women's 40s, Young Cup struggled to a 2=1 win over Spain. That left them in a 3 way tie with So Africa and Spain, as So Africa beat the USA and lost to Spain. However, since Spain beat So Africa 3=0 Spain advances to the knockout stage and USA plays today in the 5=8 place playoff. Hollman lost at #2 singles, Magers won at #1 singles in 3 sets, dropping the 2nd set in a breaker, and Magers/Hollman won the doubles in straight sets.
The Connolly and Bueno Cup teams advanced easily to win their groups, with the Connolly Cup winning over Ireland ...Ginnard and Karwasky won singles and Barnes/Bennett won doubles; and the Bueno Cup taking out Netherlands...Wright/Fishburne won singles and Harris/Nichols won the doubles...(60 60!). Connolly Cup plays Switzerland today in the quarters of the knockout round and Bueno has the day off before taking on Austria on Friday.
At Belek, the women's 45s are in the semis and play the 3rd seed, France today, which will be a very tough match for the USA. Diane Fishburne, Robin Harris and Susan Wright are on their way over to support that team (after our 2 hour 7am practice), armed with a map, Turkish phrase book and American cell phone.).
Weather yesterday was perfect, a little cloudy today, but so far no repeat of Monday's wicked winds. WE have been practicing at 7am daily and see the courts get rolled by hand daily...the tile being cleaned, there is an army working here. The red clay here is much slower than American har tru and the balls are heavy and precious (each ball costs about $3.50!).
I'm off to watch matches and take photos.
Tuesday April 24th UpdateMonday update from Belek: The USA men's 55 (Austria) Cup team won; the USA men's 45 (Dubler) Cup team won and the women's 45 (Court) Cup team did not play.
Tuesday update from Manavgat:
Men's 35, Italia Cup: USA beat Romania 3-0, dropping only the first game played during the day and winning a golden set in doubles.
The men's 40, Trabert Cup, beat Australia, with Martin Barba winning at #1 singles and Rick Leach at #2 singles and Rick Kepler/Gil Schluerholz taking the doubles point.
The men's 50, Perry Cup, also played Turkey and won 3-0. Tom Smith played #2 singles; Chris Bennett played #1 singles and Ross Persons/Sal Castillo played doubles.
The women's 35s, Suzanne Lenglen Cup, won 2-1 over Netherlands. Carolyn Wei played #2 singles and lost; Jessica Schlotterback played #1 singles and Julie Cass/Michelle King won the doubles point. The latter 2 matches were won in straight sets. They are off today, then play Spain and Germany to complete their round robin. Both matches will be tough.
The women's 40, Young Cup, won 3-0 against Turkey. Rhona Kaczmarczyk and Mariana Hollman played singles and Ellen Markowitz/Gretchen Magers played doubles. The team they lost to yesterday, So Africa, lost to Spain 3-0 today. USA plays Spain tomorrow to determine which of So Africa, Spain and USA advances to the semis. Spain lost one set, at #1 singles.
The women's 50, Bueno Cup, won 3-0 against Slovenia and didn't drop a game in 3 matches. Susan Wright played #2 singles, Diane Fishburne played #1 singles and Robin Harris/Carolyn Nichols played doubles. Tomorrow we play Netherlands, then have an off day Thursday.
The women's 55, Connolly Cup, won 3-0 against...you guess it, Turkey. Mary Ginnard played #2 singles, Tina Karwasky played #1 singles and Kathy Barnes/Kathy Bennett played doubles. Tomorrow they play Ireland, then have an off day on Thursday.
The weather today was great, much better than yesterday, which was too windy. I'll try and upload some photos tomorrow of play...not much time here to do that. Our team, Bueno Cup, plays starting at 9, the 55s start at 10; the 40s at 11 and the 35s at 1:30, so there's a team to watch play all day long. The 35s didin't finish till after 6pm...and we started our practice at 7am!
The courts here are red clay and every morning, starting at dawn, there are workers out rolling the courts by hand, then after warm up before matches, they are swept and the lines done. There are over 60 courts here and a lot of activity...this event plus juniors training, and tourists taking lessons and playing. They are building more courts too, for next year's event and they also host events such as zonal Fed Cup.
More tomorrow, if you have questions, email me.
4月23日 Monday Evening Update, ManavgatThere were 3 American teams in action at Manvgat today: It was extremely windy all day.
The Italia Cup, Men's 35s (USA) won its opening match against Ireland. Curtis Dunn played a 2 set marathon to start the procedings, and won, and Juan Carlos Parker wrapped up the win, with a straight set win at #1 singles, powering through the wind with his fine serve and ground strokes.
The USA Lenglen Cup team also won decisively over Turkey, with Julie Cass winning at #1 singles, Jessica Schlotterback at #2 singles and Michelle King/Carolyn Wei taking the doubles point.
The USA Young Cup team didn't fare as well. The 2-time defending champions fell to a tough So African team. Mariana Hollman lost at #2 singles, but battled hard in the 2nd set, rallying from 1-3 down to force a tiebreaker, before falling 7-5.
Gretchen Magers won in straight sets at #1 singles but the So Africans took the doubles point over Magers/Rhona Kaczmarczyk.
The remaining American teams and the USA Court Cup team had byes today. More tomorrow...

Men’s 50s and men’s 35s…have not yet spoken to the captains.
The opening ceremonies were tonight, beginning with a parade of nations and followed by short speeches (less than 5 minutes) and some Turkish dancing (and for the Americans, a photo session).
Weather today was mild but overcast with a few sprinkles and not too windy. Carter, Matthiessen and Shepard Strike Gold in HuntsvilleOne gold ball wasn’t enough for the singles winner at the 60-80 clay courts in Huntsville on April 20th. They wanted two and earned them. Brenda Carter won a “double-double” in the 60s for the third straight time, teaming with Betty Wachob to win the doubles over the unseeded duo of Carol (Propstra) Gay and Liane Bryson, and winning the singles over Wachob in 3 sets.
The match of the tournament, at least for doubles was probably the first round encounter of Sheila Johnson/Janet Watanabe and Carter/Wachob. The former led a set and 5-1 before the top seeds rallied to force a tiebreaker, which they won. Johnson/Watanabe also led in the final set and had one match point before falling in the tiebreaker.
Carol Clay/Ellen Goodman finished third; Judy Louie took the bronze over Clay in three sets.
Dorothy Matthiessen continued her unbeaten streak in the 70s, beating Burnett Herrick (who had a fine clay tournament, reaching the final for the first time on clay), and combining with Boots Van Nostrand to take the doubles title over Kathy Langer/Lyn Tietz. Kathy Langer wins the comeback player of the year…she was down a set and 5-1 to Dori deVries, the 2nd seed, and also down 3-0 in the third but rallied to win the match (Dori took fifth) and finished 3rd in the tournament over Roz King. King took out two seeds en route to the semis, Carol Wood in the round of 16 and Inge Weber of Canada in the quarters.
Matthiessen/Van Nostrand edged the 2nd seeds, Langer/Lyn Tietz in a tough 3 setter in the final. Roz King/Nancy Reed placed third.
In the 80s, Irene Shepard won the singles in 3 sets over Betty Eisenstein, and combined with Marilyn Skiffington to win the doubles over the top seeds, Rita Price/Marian Tyrell. They beat the top 2 seeds to do it and I believe it is Marilyn’s first gold ball! Piyachart Hussey/Dorothy Knode placed third in doubles; Price took the bronze in singles.
4月21日 Saturday UpdateDiane Fishburne, the 4th member of our Bueno Cup team arrived last night, but her luggage didn't. She ended up having to to back to Antalya to fetch it ($150 cab ride, about 2 hours round trip) after morning practice, but now has her bags.
Susan Wright, Robin Harris and I arrived Thursday, and it was really a funny sight...a subcompact car, 4 people (the driver and the 3 of us) and 7 big bags, 3 tennis bags and 3 purses...but we managed to get it all in the car for the hour drive here.
Most of the other Americans have arrived, and I spoke to all of the captains here at Manavgat, they all now have their USA towels to give to their opponents.
Susan, Robin and I met up with the South African women's teams after practice and went to Side via boat. Side is an ancient port city. We walked around, boated back on the Mediterranean (truly Mediterranean Blue today) and were back in time for our 2nd practice...and dinner of course.
Black and White night tonight at Ali Bey...everyone is encouraged to dress in black and white and we ate at the beach restaurant.
I met up with the 35s captain Michelle King (gave her towels and Mary Boswell's American pins); Kathy Barnes (pins), Rhona Kaczmarzyk (pins today, towels yesterday) and Curtis Cunn (towels); Rick Leach (handed his towels to Rick Kepler) and Sal Castillo (yesterday, towels). All the captains seem well prepared and also are prepared for a photo session tomorrow.
Captains' meetings will be tomorrow and then we'll know the draws and seeds. Hopefully I'll be able to update this site at that time and add photos, but if not, the ITF should have info.
I haven't heard yet from Belek, will try to call over there tomorrow after the captains' meetings.
Friday UPdateFriday April 20, 2007 Ali Bey Manavgat, Turkey
The American teams began arriving here today. Susan Wright, Robin Ogburn and I practiced a couple of times. Diane Fishburne’s baggage didn’t arrive unfortunately, but she’s game for practicing anyway at 8am. The clay is red, the balls are heavy, but the practice went well anyway…senior Americans like clay. The wireless access has been withdrawn from Ali Bey by management for some reason within the past couple of weeks.
The weather is great, very cool in the mornings, sunny and breezy and 70s thereafter.
As ususal, if anyone goes hungry here, it’s not the fault of Ali Bey, they are feeding us well.
The draws will be done on Sunday and team photos, if I can find wireless access, I’ll upload photos.
