5月29日 Westwood Cat II, Final resultsI'm back in Sunny California. It rained on and off all day at Westwood, but most of the matches were completed. I left in a driving rainstorm and drove slowly to the airport. Here are the results from the final rounds.
Winners included Anders Eriksson in the men's 35s, Tridib Goswamin who upset Ross Persons in the 50s, Kelly Ward in the 40s, Jimmy Parker in the 60s, Julie Cass in the 35s, Shelly Works in the 40s, Kathy Vick in the 45s, Carolyn Nichols in the 50s, Hilary Marold in the 55s, Kathy Langer in the 65s, Margaret Canby in the 75s, Buddy Lomax in the 70s, Scott Denison in the 75s and Marvin Henderson in the 80s.
5月27日 Westwood Cat II, AustinHello again from Austin. It rained some yesterday but my opponent and I dried the court and finished our match about an hour late. We even played our doubles in daylight, finishing around 7, in time to go to the barbeque (and Texas barbeque is really good). But matches on Friday weren't finished till 1:30 am...Frank Kelly, the TD was back early on Sat with only 3 hours sleep and Ben Ball came up from Corpus Christi Texas to input all the results and run the desk.
Today I played Sylvia Morris who beat the 4th seed first round, and won that match. Hilary Marold and I were supposed to play Mary Morgan and Teal Lang in the 50 doubles final, but Mary hurt her back, and had to pull out of singles and doubles so Teal and I played the singles final as well. There was about a 2 hour rain delay in the morning, but matches got on about 10am, and it was still dry at 4pm, though thunder was rumbling when I left at 4pm.
The match of the day for the women...of the tournament, was between Julie Cass, Austin and a pro at the Westwood CC where we played the event, and Nancy Hilliard from Corpus Christi, TX. These two played on the same high school team but Nancy is just returning to tournaments after a long break. She didn't look like she'd missed a step though, she is a lefty and a very quick counterpuncher with a deadly passing shot. She beat Michelle King in the semis. She won the first set against Cass in the final before Cass rebounded in the 2nd, winning it 60. The third set was close all the way, with all the games being won on the south side till 4-4 when Julie finally held serving into the sun, and then broke to take the match. It was entertaining...Julie was attacking as much as possible and Nancy was countering and giving Julie very little pace to hit, while keeping the ball deep and throwing up great lobs or hitting terrific passes when Julie forced her way into net.
Another good match was Kathy Vick and Heidi Gerger. Kathy won 61 63, but it took 2 hours of grueling rallies for her to win, many points went over 50 hits according to one onlooker. Kathy's experience and consistency were the difference in the end.
There were several good men's matches too, in action were Ross Persons in the 50s, Jimmy Parker in the 60s, Anders Eriksson and Kline Sacks in the 35s and Kelly Ward in the 40s, a strong showing over all.
By the way, the 70 and over divisions here are played on CLAY, not on hard courts! 5月25日 Rainy AustinRegular gas is $2.99....a relative bargain, especially after $3.60 plus in San Diego last week...that's the good news. The bad news is that it's rainy here and expected to stay that way throughout the weekend. The 1pm matches are finishing now and the later matches are still on court...which explains why today's results haven't been posted yet...they are not finished. It also explains why it's so green around here, very pretty, rolling hills and looks like February in California (green), albeit much warmer, 80s.
I am supposed to play at 9 and 4:30 tomorrow...the doubles will probably be under lights as it's supposed to rain a lot tomorrow too. Fortunately Texans are a very polite bunch and taking the rain in stride.
By the way, the 70 and over divisions here are played on CLAY, not on hard courts!
Here's a link to the draws...will try to post some photos tomorrow. 5月20日 Susan Love Wins 45 Indoors; Karwasky Takes 55 TitleSusan Love won the 45 indoor singles title this year but it wasn't easy. She had to go 3 sets in the quarters over Jeanne Hulsen, in the semis over Kathy Vick and in the final over Mariana Hollman to win the indoors.
Tina Karwasky, in contrast, didn't lose a set en route to the 55 indoor title, but Martha Downing pushed her in the first set hard before succoming to Tina's all court pressure 75 62. Mary Ginnard took the bronze with a 64 62 win over last year's champion, Kathy Barnes. Christy Schaeffer cruised through the back draw after losing to Karwasky, beating last year's finalist, Susie Peiffer 60 61 to finish 5th. She also finished 5th with Karen O'Sullivan in the 45 doubles.
Yeomans and Harris Win Inaugural 90 DoublesYou can't win them all! (I mean if Rafa can lose on clay, anything is possible.) Pat Yeomans and Jean Harris took the inaugural national women's 90 doubles title with a 62 63 win over Bea Greene and Dodo Cheney today in La Jolla. It was Pat's 10th gold ball. Jean also won the silver in singles this week. These ladies are really an inspiration to us all, true examples of tennis as a sport of a lifetime. It's very interesting to speak with them, Pat is a tennis historian and has lots of great stories about the early days of senior tennis. She was instrumental in getting the older age divisions added (older as in 50 and over women) back in the 70s, as was Dodo.
The feed-in was completed today too.
Chris Ramsower-Pearlstein placed 5th, beating Frances O'Sullivan 62 63 in the FIC final.
Sheila Johnson placed 5th in the 60s with a default win over Carol Clay (food poisoning).
Chris Smith was to play Burnett Herrick in the 70 consolation final, no score yet reported.
June Gay beat Marion Tyrell to place 5th in the 80s.
In 60 doubles, Liane Bryson, Carol Gay beat Jane Pang/Anne Russ to place 5th.
In the 70 doubles, Jane Buffington/Canby won the consolation final over Morgan/Wurden.
The 80 consolation winners were Irene Shepard/Pyachart Hussey over Barth/Howard 62 60.
The 50s results aren't up yet.
5月19日 Gold Balls Awarded in La JollaOne of the longest win streaks in senior tennis (Rafa's streak is still going) ended today when Dori deVries won the 70 hard courts over Dorothy Matthiessen in 3 sets. Dorothy won the singles gold slam in the 65s in 2004 and in the 70s in 2005 and 2006, but her run of wins in singles ended today when Dori played a great match to oust Dorothy in three sets. Dorothy gained a measure of revenge however in the doubles, combining with Burnette Herrick to win the gold over Dori and Roz King. Dorothy and Burnette won the first set comfortably, but found themselves down 5-2 in the second set as Roz put up some fine lobs and hit some good volleys, but Burnette settled down and anything Dorothy hit from then out did damage, and the top seeds won 62 75. Kathy Langer/Lyn Tietz rallied from a set down to beat Carol Wood and Mary Boswell 16 64 61 in the third place playoff.
Diane Fishburne also had to rally to win the 50 singles, as Susan Wright came out in the first set firing bullets and doing damage. Susan won the first set 63 before Diane dug in and took the final sets 62 63, winning lots of backhand exchanges according to one onlooker. It was a hard hitting match (one spectator commented that there were no moonballs in that match.). There were lots of moonballs in the third place playoff (mostly hit my me). I beat Robin Harris 60 61, but it was much closer than the score would indicate, over 90 minutes, and the penultimate game lasted 20 minutes according to some observers.
Susan combined with Kathy May Fritz to beat Robin and Chris Ramsower-Pearlstein 61 46 62. Susan and Kathy were leading comfortably, a set and 3-1, but then Robin and Chris stepped up their games and errors crept into Susan and Kathy's game (Susan looked to be tiring). At 2-2 in the third though, the top seeds hit a higher gear their opponents couldn't match, the errors disappeared and they ran out the final 4 games.
Betty Eisenstein took the gold in the 80 singles, avenging her final round loss at the 80 clay to Irene Shepard by beating her 64 64 here. Rita Price took the bronze and combined with Marian Tyrell to win the gold in doubles over Cathie Hall/Pat Niehaus. Phyllis Adler, playing her first tournament in several years, combined with a new "gold ball club" member, Marilyn Skiffington, to win the bronze over Lovie Beard/Loucille Scoggins.
Brenda Carter held off a late charge by Suella Steel (she led 61 3-0, then 5-0 in the tiebreaker and 6-4 before closing out the set 8-6 in the tiebreak) to win the 60 hard courts for the first time. She doubled her gold ball take here when she and Betty Wachob beat Suella Steel 62 63 in the doubles final. Betty and Brenda were backboard-like in the doubles, moving well and making few errors during the final. Charleen Hillebrand/Cathie Anderson took the bronze with a 3 set win over Carol Clay/Ellen Goodman. Betty Wachob beat Hillebrand 61 62 to win the bronze in singles.
Dodo won the 90 singles today over Jean Harris 61 62. The 90 doubles final is tomorrow morning. Pat Yeomans took the bronze over Bea Greene. The four are set to reconvene in Portland in August for the 90 indoors.
5月18日 Morgan Run, men's 75/80/85 Hard CourtsGraydon Nichols won the hard courts at Morgan Run for the 4th straight year (once in the 75s and three years running in the 80s, 61 ret injury over his doubles partner, Roald Flater.
Chuck Devoe plays Marvin Brown in the 75 men's final. DeVoe ousted Scott Denison and Brown beat Joe Russell.
The 85 singles final is between Marvin Henderson and Ed Tyler.
La Jolla Day 5The semis were played today at the hard courts in La Jolla...still a "May Gray" Day (the newspaper predicted the sun would come out on May 23).
Susan Wright played a nearly flawless match against Robin Harris in the 50 singles. The two played in the semis of the worlds 2 weeks ago, in a long 3 set match in which Robin held 4 match points. But today, half a world away and on a hard court, Susan hit winner after winner to take the match 60 61. One spectator said that Susan made only 4 unforced errors the entire match.
Diane Fishburne beat me again, also a repeat of the semis of the world championships 2 weeks ago, this time 62 61 in about 90 minutes (we started a few minutes before Susan and Robin and they finished before we completed the first set). Diane hit lots of winners.
So the final will be a repeat of the final of the world championships 2 weeks ago, which Diane won.
In the 70s, Kathy Langer gave Dorothy Matthiessen all she could handle. Kathy started out strongly, forging a 5-2 lead, Dorothy rallied to level the set at 5-5 and then 6-6, but Kathy pulled out the tiebreaker. The second set also went to at tiebreaker and Kathy led 5-2. During the ensuing point, a ball rolled into the court, a let was played, and that distracted Kathy just enough to let Dorothy into the set. Dorothy pulled out the 2nd set and then rolled through the third. It was a 3.5 hour match. In contrast, Dori deVries beat Roz King 62 63 to reach the final here for the 2nd straight year, and unusually, Dori will be the better rested player in the final.
In the 60s, Brenda Carter played a great match to beat her doubles partner 62 63. She will place home town favorite Suella Steel in the final. Suella beat Charleen Hillebrand, the defending champion, 75 in the third to reach the final.
Irene Shepard remained undefeated in the 80s, rolling past last year's winner, Rita Price 62 61. She faces Betty Eisenstein in the final. Betty beat Cathie Hall 63 62 to reach the final. It will be a repeat of last month's clay court final.
Robin Harris/Chris Ramsower-Pearlstein played a steady match to oust Diane Fishburne/Rita Anderson 62 64.
The 90s are playing here too and Dodo was on court one today, playing Bea Greene. Bea had retired from tennis, or so she thought....but Dodo persuaded her to "unretire". Loucille Scoggins was scouting the match, in anticipation of entering the 90s in 2009 (that's preparation).
5月17日 Thursday: La Jolla and Morgan RunI went over today to the men's 75/80/85 Hard Courts at Morgan Run in Rancho Santa Fe, about 30 minutes northeast of La Jolla to watch my dad, Graydon play. He's in the final of the 80 singles and doubles (with Roald Flater of Colorado). He plays Flater, who just won the 80 indoors last week, in the final tomorrowa and Nichols/Flater play Paul Roberts/Lee Smith, the 2nd seeds in the final of the doubles.
In the 75s Chuck deVoe takes on Scott Denison...Denison took out Russell Seymour, who had to retire with sciatica after Denison won the 2nd set.
Joe Russell and Marvin Brown are in the other semi.
The women's event in La Jolla had only one major upset, Roz King took out the 2nd seed, Burnette Herrick, in 3 sets in the quarters of the 70s. She plays Dori DeVries next, who had to go 3 sets to beat Lyn Tietz. Kathy Langer advanced by default over Carol Wood, who had an unfortunate run in between her toe and her bed and the bed won...and Dorothy Matthiessen had no problems with traffic today, or her opponent, and also advanced to the semis.
5月16日 La Jolla Day3La Jolla Day 3, Wednesday: Another "May Gray" day, but another nice day for tennis.
In the 50s, Donna Drosner, one of the 5-8 seeds, lost on Tuesday to the steady and tenacious Judy Belinsky...who lost today to Mary Morgan a 9-16 seed. So Mary now takes on Susan Wright, the top seed in the quarters. Jackie Snell (a 9-16 seed) took out Kandy Chain (a 5-8 seed) in 3 sets. They had just played in the final of the SoCal sectionals last weekend, where Chain won.
Frances O'Sullivan narrowly avoided an upset, edging Priscilla Sisson 76 in the third. Frances rolled through the 1st set 61, then Sisson rallied to take the 2nd set 76. Frances was tough in the 3rd set tiebreaker, winning it 7 points to 4.
The top 8 seeds all reached the quarters in the 60 singles, with the closest match being Carol Clay's 63 62 win over Janet Watanabe.
In the 70s, Lyn Tietz beat Anneke Balics, a 5-8 seed, 62 60 to reach the quarters against Dori DeVries.
Doubles in the 50s are going on now, the round of 16, the 60s and 70s have the day off from doubles.
5月15日 La Jolla, Day 2Day II in La Jolla...a May Gray day which found the sun nonexistant, but the courts kept warm with all the feet running around them all day.
In the women's 50s there was one mild upset, Patricia Sisson edged Debbie Burgess. Kandy Chain was taken to the limit agains Mary Alice Hillier, winning 76 in the third.
In the 60s, Wende Walter gave Char Hillebrand a workout before falling 75 62; and Uta Hegberg beat Anne Russ in a tough but straight-set battle.
In the 70s, the closest anyone came to an upset was the traffic vs Dorothy Matthiessen, who worked up more of sweat driving down to La Jolla (since she barely made it in time) than on the court as her opponent was forced to retire mid-match with an injury. The other seeds also won.
There are doubles now on court and many tough matchups tomorrow as most 50s matches involve 2 seeds playing each other.

5月14日 La JollaThe Hard Courts for the women's 50-90 began today in La Jolla under really perfect weather...a little cool, but sunny. I've added some photos of the beach below.
The singles and doubles began in the women's 50, 60 and 70s. All remaining players will be in action in those divisions tomorrow, with a full schedule, as there are 32 draws remaining in all of those divisions, plus some round of 32 matches in the 80s.
There is a record entry in the women's 90s...4...plus the first ever doubles match in the 90s, Dodo and Bea Greene against Pat Yeomans and Jean Harris.
5月5日 Final Day: Americans win 8 titles.Wilder, Fishburne, Dailey Double at Worlds
Val Wilder won the men’s 45s singles, successfully defending his title, when John Chatlak, his American opponent was unable to take the court due to a back injury. Chatlak was a singles and doubles finalist here (with Egan Adams), while Wilder won the 45 singles and doubles (with Fedderly).
Diane Fishburne won her 4th and 5th world titles here. She won her third world singles title, and her first in the 50s, over Susan Wright 63 62. Wright has reached the quarters, semis and final at her last 3 world championships in singles, and reaching the final on her least favorite surface was a tremendous performance. However, Fishburne proved to be the class of the event, moving beautifully and turning defense into offense often. It was a bit windy today, but not enough to seriously affect play and it was quite warm.
Larry Turville fell again to Andrew Rae of Australia in straight sets in the 55s final, but won the doubles.
Danny Waldman won the 50 men’s singles final.
In all Americans won the following titles:
Women’s 35 doubles: Mary Dailey Women’s 45 doubles: Mary Dailey/Diane Fishburne Women’s 50 singles: Diane Fishburne Women’s 50 doubles: Robin Harris/Carolyn Nichols
Men’s 45 singles: Val Wilder Men’s 45 doubles: Mike Fedderly/Val Wilder Men’s 50 singles: Dan Waldman Men’s 55 doubles: Larry Turville/Neal Newman Click here to read the ITF article on the final day.
Americans Win Titles in Turkey FridayWorld Championships: Americans Win Titles in Turkey
American players won several world titles Friday and compete for more Saturday.
In the women’s 35 doubles, Mary Dailey combined with a French player to win her 2nd world doubles title of the day.
In the women’s 45 doubles, Dailey and Diane Fishburne won their second world doubles title together, winning the final in convincing fashion. Fishburne goes for her third world singles title and 5th world title overall on Saturday against Susan Wright, who is playing in her first world title.
In women’s 50 doubles, Robin Harris and Carolyn Nichols won their first world title, beating 2005 champions Sue Walters and Lyn Mortimer of Australia 62 63 in the final. They lobbed well to keep their aggressive opponents off the net and were the more consistent team.
Liz Allan of Australia won her 15th consecutive world doubles title, and 7th in row with Kerry Ballard, also of Australia, over fellow Aussies.
The men’s 45s is an All-American affair. The final will be contested today between 5th seeded John Chatlak and top seeded and defending world champion Val Wilder. Mike Fedderly/Val Wilder won the doubles. The duo has been nearly unbeatable in the past several years, having won the doubles gold slam in the USA in 2006 (taking the grass, clay, hard and indoor titles), and the world championships.
In men’s 50s, Ross Persons lost in the semis, but American Dan Waldman, one of the 9-16 seeds reached the final against a French player. They play later today.
Tom Smith and Ross Persons lost in the 50 doubles on Friday. Smith first contested the 55 doubles final (with American Phil Landauer), but fell to the all-American team of Larry Turville/Neal Newman. He slipped on the tile after showering though between matches and broke his toe prior to the 50 doubles final. Ouch!
Larry Turville plays Andrew Rae in the 55 singles final and hopes to avenge his loss of a week ago in the Cup final. Turville had won their two encounters prior to last weeks’ loss against the scrappy and consistent Aussie.
5月3日 Thursday May 3rd updateIt's been a busy week here...
Americans were pretty successful here considering it's red clay. In the women's 40s, Rhona Kaczmarczyk won some matches before bowing out on Tuesday.
In the women's 45s, Mariana Hollman fell to the third seed 64 64 on Tuesday, and on Monday won a marathon three set match against an Italian player. Myke Bodisch reached the quarters and pushed the 2nd seed to the limit before falling 64 in the third.
In the women's 50s, it was an all American semifinal, with Diane Fishburne coasting efficiently to the final. Susan Wright just eked by Robin Harris 75 in the third, rallying from a 4-5, 0-40 deficit in the third and holding off 4 match points total to reach the Saturday final. Harris/Carolyn Nichols reached the doubles final by default when one of their opponents had a plane to catch.
In the women's 55s, Ching Ling Chang reached the semis, losing to Marjorie Love of Gr Britain. Toni Novack fell in the round of 16.
In the men's 35s, Kline Sacks won several matches, as did Curtis Dunn in the 40s. In the men's 45s, Val Wilder and John Chatlak are in the semis, as are Ross Persons and Danny Waldman in the men's 50s. The men's 55s, Larry Turville is in the semis.
In doubles, Robin Harris/Carolyn Nichols are in the 50 women's final; It's an all-American final in the men's 55s, with Neal Newman/Larry Turville facing Phil Landauer/Tom Smith.
Mary Dailey is in two doubles finals, the 45s with Diane Fishburne and the 35s with a top French player.
In men's 45s, it's also an all American final, with Chatlak/Egan Adams facing Wilder/Mike Fedderly.
Ross Persons/Tom Smith are in the 50 men's doubles semis.
The weather all week has been great. There should be some great tennis tomorrow, then Saturday I'm heading out to Istanbul and back to the USA Sunday.
