7月21日 Germantown, the 65-85 GrassCharleen Hillebrand and Suella Steel won their third doubles title of the year in the 65s, beating Lurline Fujii/Jane Pang in the final. Fujii/Pang upset the 2nd seeds, Wasser/Weinstock in the semis.
Hillebrand also won the singles, beating Steel in the final, and levelling their matches at 2-2 for the year, though Hillebrand has a 2-1 edge in Category I finals. Susanne Clark beat Grace Woo in the 3/4 playoff.
Suzanne Ryerson won her second straight 75 grass singles title, upsetting the top seed, Louise Russ, for the 2nd year in a row in the semis, before going on to beat unseeded Caroline Clark in the final. Clark had edged the 2nd seed, Elaine Mason 75 in the third the day before. Russ beat Mason 61 76 to take the bronze.
Diane Hoffman retained her 75 doubles title, combining with Joyce Jones to upset the previously undefeated team of Angie Ray/Jeannette Weiland in the semis and then taking the final by default over Ryerson/Eva Barbiero.
Dodo won the 3 person round robin in the 85s, with Loucille Scoggins taking the silver.
MerionMerion ended today and most of the usual suspects took home the gold balls...but there were a few who snuck out with bronze and silvers.
Julie Cass continued her perfect year in the 35s (at the national level), winning her third straight national singles title and 3rd national 35 doubles title of the year (and 6th straight in the 35s), with Michelle King. Cass beat Jessica Schlotterback in the singles final and Cass/King beat Schlotterback/Kaczmarek in the doubles final. Trish Riddell took third in the singles.
Yukie Koizumi won the singles and was third in doubles with Abbi Neuthaler (her first USTA ball!). She beat Susan Wright in a repeat of the 2005 final. Wright and Gerda Preissing teamed up to win the doubles gold over Tina Karwasky/Mary Ginnard. Karwasky beat Gerda Preissing to place third. Ginnard edged Myke Bodisch in the semis of the consolation 76 in the third and Susan Love beat Kim Lackey. The final went unplayed today.
Heide Orth won the 55 singles over Barb Mueller (and Heide can play the 65s next year!); Molly Hahn took the bronze when Anne Guerrant retired. Kathy Bennett is 3/4 of the way to a doubles slam; she teamed with Molly Hahn to win her first grass doubles title (it was Molly's third straight one) over Orth/Mueller in 3 sets. Janet Harpold/Liz Leigh won the bronze in doubles (which I believe was Liz's first USTA ball as well). Cooper/Keleman placed 5th.
7月18日 Grass Courts, Forest HillsForest Hills came and went last week.
The 40s was won by Yukie Koizumi again. The Japanese player is awesome on grass, great movement. She also won the doubles with Mary Dailey. Koizumi beat Gerda Preissing of Germany in the singles final and handed Gerda and Mary Johnson a loss in the doubles final as well.
The 50s went to Tina Karwasky, her 5th in a row, over Sherri Bronson for the 3rd straight year. Mary Ginnard and Tina won the doubles over Nancy Neff and Connie Jones.
The 60s title went to Heide Orth, who improved her finish from last year when she was 4th. She traded places with Mary Wilson this year. Orth beat Judy Louie in the final. Wilson retained her doubles title however, combining with Betty Wachob to oust Louie/Suella Steel in 3 sets. The biggest upset was Betty Wachob's win over Steel in the singles quarterfinal.
The 70s was won (3 guesses, and they all begin with M)...by Dorothy Matthiessen, who thus far is undefeated in this age division. She had a struggle in the final against Burnette Herrick, beating her in 3 sets to retain her title. Herrick ousted Dori deVries in 3 sets in the semis. deVries edged Nancy Reed in the3/4 playoff 06 75 60. Matthiessen/Belmar Gunderson retained their doubles title but had to go 3 hard sets to defeat Lee Burling (great to see Lee back) and Nancy Reed in the semis. Burling/Reed placed third in doubles. deVries/Herrick were 2nd.
Elaine Mason was back in winning form, taking her first singles title in a long time when she beat first Rita Price, and then Pat Niehaus to win the gold. She and June Dickey also won the doubles gold over Hussey/Price.
The 30 singles was offered at Forest Hills, but no one bit. The doubles was a round robin and Mary Dailey won her 2nd doubles gold, going undefeated in 3 matches, though she and Trish Riddell barely overcame Mary Johnson/Kim Lackey 76 in the third. Judy Stiff/Frances O'Sullivan took the silver.
