The women's super senior teams will be posted in August. 7月22日 Ginnard, Cass, Koizumi Take Merion Singles TitlesThe 55s: Ginnard Wins Two Gold Balls:
Mary Ginnard won her first ever grass court singles title, edging her doubles partner, Tina Karwasky 76 in the third in the final. She rallied from 0-3 down in the third to win. She didn’t have an easy road to the final, barely getting past Ching Ling Chang in the quarters (winning 75 in the third), though she had an easy time with Leslie Pixley in the semis. Kawarsky, in contrast, was never pressed en route to the final, beating this year’s clay court finalist, Liz Leigh in the quarters, then Molly Hahn, who is always tough on grass, in the semis before falling to Ginnard.
Hahn took out the 2005 champion, Anne Guerrant in the quarters, 26, 3-3 ret injury. A round earlier, Peggy Machoian beat last year’s finalist, Barb Mueller 75 63, but then fell in three sets to Pixley in the quarters. Hahn beat Pixley 62 62 to win the bronze ball.
Chang rebounded to win the feed-in final over Mueller, 57 61 ret.
Ginnard/Karwasky dominated the doubles. They lost only three games in their four match romp to the title. Two of the games lost were in the final to the two-time defending champions, Hahn/Kathy Bennett. Bennett/Hahn escaped with a three set win in the semis over Cindy LePrevost/Lil Peltz-Petow 64 in the third. LePrevost/Peltz-Petow won the bronze ball with a decisive 62 62 win over Margie Cooper/Mueller.
Cindy Babb/Susie Peiffer won the back draw over Machoian/Joan Oelschlager.
The 35s: Cass Three-Peats
Julie Cass won her third straight singles and doubles titles in the 35s at Merion this year. She beat the 2nd seed, Trish Riddell in the final and combined with Michelle King to beat Riddell/Mary Dailey in the final. Shari Webber upset the third –seeded King in the first round and reached the semis. Dailey bat Webber to place third; King finished 5th. Leisure/Long took the bronze.
The 45s: Koizumi Wins Singles; Thompson/Hollman Win Doubles
The 45s was the only division without a two-gold ball winner…but Yukie Koizumi came awfully close to a sweep of the grass court events these past two weeks. After cruising to the 40 singles and doubles titles at Forest Hills, she had a bit more of a struggle to take the 45s crown. She had a tough match with Hyacinth Yorke in the quarters, 75 62, then went three sets before subduing Mariana Hollman in the semis. However, she played flawlessly in the final, beating Susan Wright 63 61. Wright beat Myke Loomis 16 62 60 in the other semi. Loomis edged Susie Brown in the quarters before falling to Wright. Brown scored the only upset in the main draw, edging Jeanne Hulsen in three sets in the round of 16. Tracey Thompson scared Hollman in the quarters, but eventually fell to the 4th seed in three sets.
Loomis slipped on the grass and fell hard and badly in the first game of the playoff against Hollman. She injured her leg/back and was unable to continue and was also unable to play the playoff in doubles. Get well soon Myke.
The backdraw was very competitive, with Yorke being the only player to default in the entire backdraw. Mary Johnson (who lost early on to Yorke in the main draw 61 62), finished 5th, with a marathon win over Thompson 76 (6) in the third.
Thompson however went home with something Johnson would have traded that win for: a gold ball. She and Hollman did not drop a set in winning the title. Thompson/Hollman beat Koizumi/Abbi Neuthaler 75 64 in the final. Lori Fahrenholz/Kim Lackey won the bronze ball by the aforementioned default over Loomis/Wright and Brown/Johnson finished 5th in doubles.
Germantown: Steel, Boswell, Cheney Garner GoldSuella Steel said it was the best win of her life...her 75 62 win in the Germantown 65s final over her doubles partner, world champion Charleen Hillebrand. It wasn't her first win this year over Charleen...but it was her best she said because it occurred on grass in the final. It was Steel's second national singles title this year. She also edged Hillebrand in the indoor final and in the semis of the 60 hard courts. Hillebrand dominated their rivalry last year, and the two players have dominated the 65s the past two years.
Sheila Weinstock, a fine grass court player, beat Lurline Fujii in the 3/4 playoff. (Note that the seeds, 1-4, ended up 1, 2, 3, 4 in the final results...5-8 didn't fare as well though.)
Jane Pang, showing her excellent grass court game, tore up the seeds in the back draw, (after losing to Weinstock in the main draw), beating Christa Gloge, Ria Graham and Grace Woo before scoring a straight set win over unseeded Joan Nevins.
Steel and Hillebrand continued their unbeaten streak in the 65s, winning their 7th straight national doubles title, 75 62 over Fujii/Pang. The third seeds, Carol Wood/Weinstock beat the 4th seeds, Belmar Gunderson/Retsy Wilson to win the bronze balls. Gloge/Roberta Sung, who fell in the main draw to Wood/Weinstock, finished 5th.
Mary Boswell continued her march towards a double Gold Slam, winning her third straight national 75 singles and doubles titles. She beat 2-time winner Suzanne Ryerson in the final, and combined with Louise Russ to beat Jeannette Weiland/Angie Ray for the third time this year (all in the final of a national). Boswell has not lost a singles set all year in the 75s.
Ryerson took out the clay court finalist, Lucille Kyvallos in the semis and Russ beat Kyvallos in the 3/4 playoff, avenging her loss to Kyvallos from the clay courts. Nancy Stout, consistent as always, finished 5th. She also combined with Nancy Kibbey to take the bronze ball over Zoe Williams/Peggy Winningham.
Dodo Cheney won the round robin singles and doubles in the 85s. She combined with Billie Burr, also 91 this year to win the 85 doubles over Loucille Scoggins/Lovie Beard and the singles order of finish was Cheney, Scoggins, Burr, Beard.
7月18日 Fritz, Koizumi, Hoffman Win Two Gold Balls in NYFor Yukie Koizumi, it's old hat, winning the singles at Forest Hills and becoming old hat to win the doubles too. She beat Mary Johnson to win the singles, and was never pressed during her three matches. She combined with Trisha Judge to beat Johnson/Kim Lackey in the doubles final.
Patricia Zerdan won the inaugural 30 grass court singles at Forest Hills (this event was offered last year but there were no entrants). She is 3/4 of the way to a singles Gold Slam in the 30s...and she's won four in a row, having won the 30 clay courts in 2006.
The 50 singles and doubles were won by Kathy May Fritz. She beat her doubles partner, Susan Wright, in 3 sets in the singles final (Wright has been the silver ball winner in all three 50s nationals this year and in the world Championships...and has lost in 3 sets in all three nationals. She's also received retirement wins (though was leading in all cases) in the quarters or semis of the three nationals, oddly enough). Fritz/Wright won the 50 doubles over Tina Karwasky/Mary Ginnard by default (Ginnard pulled an abdominal muscle while playing Wright in the semis and had to withdraw from the tournament).
The 60s singles title went to Betty Wachob, who stopped Brenda Carter's string of consecutive 60 national titles at four. Carter however, combined with Suella Steel to win the double title over Wachob/Mary Wilson. Carter is 3/4 of the way to a doubles gold slam, having won the clay and hard court titles with Wachob.
Dorothy Matthiessen, who suffered a rare singles loss at the hard courts to Dori deVries, rebounded to win the 70 singles over deVries in straight sets. deVries/Belmar Gunderson did upset Matthiessen/Burnett Herrick in the semis, stopping Matthiessen's streak of doubles wins in the 70s at 10, before falling in three sets in the final to the unseeded pairing of Roz King/Nancy Reed.
Diane Hoffman, always dangerous, upset Irene Shepard in the semis and edged Rita Price (who had taken out Betty Eisenstein in the other semi) in three sets before combining with her to win the doubles. Hall/Niehaus took the silver and Shepard/Skiffington the bronze in the round robin event.
Duesler Doubles at 70 Hard CourtsBob Duesler, won the 70 singles (over Herm Ahlers) and doubles titles at the men’s hard court nationals in June. He won the doubles (over Kohles/Lancaster) with Jim Nelson, with whom he won a gold slam in 2006. Rudy Hernando, and George Sarantos, won the 65 doubles at the same tournament, upending the top seeds, Carter/Grant in three sets. Allan Carter won the singles though, beating Del Campbell in the final. Click here for all results. 7月15日 Nike Senior Results
7月13日 Friday Update, FHJust a quick update on Mary Ginnard...according to Carol Wood she strained her abdominal muscle but hopes to be ready to play Merion starting next week.
I may not get online over the weekend to blog...but the results will be posted. I'll blog again Sunday night at the latest.
7月12日 Forest Hills, Thursday UpdateYukie Koizumi was a double winner in Forest Hills, and barely broke a sweat in the process. For Mary Johnson it was a bittersweet day...she reached the singles and doubles finals, but met up with Koizumi in each and came away with 2 silver balls. Koizumi/Trisha Judge beat Johnson/Lackey 63 61 while in the singls final Yukie lost only a game.
The 50s was marred by an injury to Mary Ginnard which occurred in the singles semis...trailing a set and 21 to Susan Wright she retired with an injury and also defaulted from the doubles final with Tina Karwasky (Wright is 3/4 of the way to a doubles slam now), and also the 3/4 playoff against Karwasky (who lost to Kathy Fritz in 2 sets today). Wright plays her doubles partner Kathy May Fritz in the singles final.
The 60s singles final is set with Betty Wachob taking on Brenda Carter. Wachob beat Suella Steel and Carter beat Judy Louie.
The 70s singles: the top 4 seeds are in the semis, with Matthiessen vs Langer and Herrick (who played well to beat Roz King in the quarters) taking on Dori deVries. DeVries had a great day, combining with Belmar Gunderson to hand Dorothy Matthiessen her first doubles loss in the 70s. Dororthy/Burnett fell in three sets to deVries/Gunderson. They take on unseeded King/Nancy Reed who continued their fine play with a 3 set win over Carol Wood/Dorothy Wasser.
In the 80s, upsets were the order of the day, with Rita Price beating Betty Eisenstein and Hoffman beating Irene Shepard, both in the semis.
The weather has moderated some since early in the week...play continues tomorrow.
7月11日 Forest Hills UpdatePatricia Zerdan restored order in the 30s with a straigh set win over unseeded Shareen Lai yesterday.
In the 70s, the top 4 seeds advanced to the quarters. Tomorrow Roz King takes on last year's finalist Burnette Herrick while Dori deVries, who, in contrast to last year's 3 set battle, moved smoothly past Nancy Reed, takes on Carol Wood.
In the doubles though, Reed/King scored a straight set upset over Langer/Lyn Tietz to reach the semis.
The 50s had only one minor upset today, Mary Ginnard beat Sherri Bronson in 2 close sets to reache the semis. It was her first win over Bronson on grass in 3 tries. She joins the top 3 seeds, Wright, Fritz and Karwasksy in the semis.
Brenda Carter/Suella Steel beat the defending champions, Mary Wilson/Betty Wachob, in straight sets in the final, 75 61. It was Brenda's third win in three tries in the 60 doubles this year...she'll be going for a gold slam in doubles next month at the indoors. She is also in the singles semis against Judy Louie who bested Mary Wilson 64 62. Wachob and Steel will meet in the other semi.
7月9日 Lai reaches 30 grass finalShareen Lai, unseeded, reached the final of the 30 grass courts at Forest Hills today with the loss of only 2 games...and those were to Laura Ritchey, the #2 seed and a fine player. Who is Shareen Lai? This is what she says on her USPTA website:
" I am from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and have traveled and participated in numerous countries in South-East Asia. I grew up playing junior tennis in Thailand and the Philippines before going to colllege. I graduated from Syracuse University in 2000 (Division I) and achieved a top 50 ITA National Ranking. I participated in Federation Cup for Malaysia in 2001 and SEA games in 1999. I still enjoy competing at a high level and would consider grass my favorite surface. I grew up playing on "shell" courts in the Philippines which is a composition of sand and shells and plays similar to har-tru surfaces. During my free time, I enjoy skiing, playing golf, watching movies and reading."
Recently she won the women's open division of the USPTA clay court championships and was a finalist at the USPTA grass court championships last fall. She will play Texas' Patricia Zerdan, also a fine player, in the final tomorrow.
The 40s final will take place Wednesday, with Yukie Koizumi of Japan, the many time defending champion, will take on Mary Johnson, the 2nd seed. Koizumi cruised past her doubles partner, Trisha Judge today. Trisha may have been tired from her three set battle in the first round with Kim Lackey. Mary beat Michelle Wright.
The 40 doubles, with only 6 teams is being held as a round robin, with 2 groups of 3 teams playing round robins, the winners of which will play for the gold. Johnson/Lackey will face Koizumi/Judge.
The 50 doubles are out to the final, which won't be played till Thursday. The top seeds are facing each other: Susan Wright/Kathy May will take on defending champs Tina Karwasky/Mary Ginnard in the final.
The 60 doubles final also pits the top seeds against one another: Carter/Steel vs defending champs Wilson/Wachob.
