Bill Tully Wins 4th Grandfather/Grandson Grass Title

This report came from Joanmarie Tully O'Connor (or as she says Bill calls her, #4 (of 9))

Bill Tully and his grandson, Brian O’Connor won the National Grass Court Grandfather Grandson Championships held at Longwood Cricket Club, July 21-23.  This is the fourth time Bill has won this tournament, and the second time for Brian.  Bill won twice before with two other grandsons.   His opponents want to know “ Where does he comes up with all these college players?”  The answer is simple, they were lucky enough to inherit his genes!

This brings Bill’s “Gold Ball” total to 18!  (Which coincidentally is how many  grandchildren Bill  has.)

    Germantown, 35-85 Grass

Julie Cass won her 4th straight grass singles and doubles titles in Germantown in July. She won the doubles with Michelle King and won the singles over King (who edged Trish Riddell 76 36 76 (6)..what a match). King/Cass beat Riddell/Mary Dailey in the final.

Susan Wright won her 4th singles and 5th doubles title of the year, in winning the 45 singles over her doubles partner, Mariana Hollman and combining with Hollman to upset Dailey/Joanne Russell in the final.

Tina Karwasky won the 55 grass singles and doubles, with Mary Ginnard. She beat Ginnard in 3 sets in the final, avenging her sole loss last year.

Heide Orth won the 65 singles over Suella Steel. Steel edged Donna Fales in 3 sets in one semi, while Orth was moving past Charleen Hillebrand, also in 3 sets. Fales took the bronze. Fales/Orth won the doubles when Hillebrand/Steel didn't play the final (due to injury, Charleen).

Mary Boswell beat Nancy Reed in the 75 singles; Reed/Lee Burling beat Boswell/Russ in the doubles final.

Dodo Cheney/Betty Cookson won their third gold ball of the year in 85 doubles over Wyker/Camerino, and Betty Eisenstein continued her domination of the 85 singles division, losing no games en route to the title (which was only 1 match, against Camerino).

    Forest Hills, 30-80 Grass.

At Forest Hills, Vesna McKenna won her first singles gold ball, winning the 40 singles. Erika Smith/Alissa Finerman cruised to the 40s doubles title. Yukie Koizumi spoiled Susan Wright’s attempt at a singles gold slam, beating her in the final. (Wright rebounded to win the doubles gold slam, combining with Marianne Robertson to win the doubles.) Anne Guerrant won the 60 singles in 3 sets over Brenda Carter. Molly Hahn/Heide Orth won the doubles. Dorothy Matthiessen won the 70 singles and Diane Hoffman won the 80 singles and doubles (with Jane Lutz). Shareen Lai won the 30 singles and  Jennifer Lyons/Julie Shapiro won the 30 doubles. Dorothy Matthiessen and Dori deVries edged a determined Roz King and Nancy Reed 75 in the third to win the 70s doubles.

Doris Hakman Passed Away Sunday July 13th

This is from a good friend of Doris Hakman, Emmy Lou Armstrong:

Doris's daughter, just called to tell me her mother passed away on Sunday, July 13 at 4:30 a.m.  Jeanine was with her, holding her hand.  Arrangements are pending.  Everyone will miss a fun gal on the tennis circuit.  She really, truly enjoyed all the emails and was quite touched by your concerns.  Thank you.  Emmy Lou

Nike Championships of Oregon, Final Day

Finals and 3 / 4 playoffs were held on Sunday, which was warm, 90s (the PNW players were melting!) and sunny.

Wende Walter and Gloria Carter hogged the court for well over three hours in the final RR match in the women’s 65s. Carter was the steadier player and forged a set and 5-2 lead using consistent groundstrokes and capitalizing on Walter’s errors. Walter rallied and reined in her errors enough to eke out the second set 76 and stayed aggressive to win  the final set 63.

Manola Colter dominated the field in the 40s, beating Becky Stapp in the final. Fran Chandler made a tough draw look easy, beating Kathy Vick 62 60 and Tracy Houk 61 62. the match of the division was the three hour third place playoff between Vick and Amy Closs-Miller, an aggressive lefty. Vick rallied from 1-4 30-40 to win the final set 64, altering her strategy slightly in the final set to win. Carolyn Nichols won the 50s over Bonnie Tetrick, but the match of that division was a quarterfinal between SoCal’s Lyn Ellis and PNW’s Brenda Williams. Williams had several match points in the 2nd set and both had match points in the third set tiebreaker won 10-8 by Williams. Chieko Holt had no problem winning the 55s over Karen Dunlop. Carmen Almodovar played well all week, beating Greta Watson in a close 60s final. Irene Bretzel won a RR in the 70s division.

Doubles winners were: 35s: Jeannie Haskell/Karen Burns; 40s: Colter/Closs-Miller (who unseeded, beat the top seeds, Kristen Hartley/Jeannie Hulsen in the semis and Sandoz/Turner in the final; 45s: Houk/Nichols beat Chandler/Vick in the 45s final in a three hour final. The match was played on very shadowy court…some sun, some shade, very hard to see volleys…so there were a lot of moonballs in that match. Houk made some great moves at the net and hit some key overheads to force the play (really!). Ellis/Tetrick won the 50s; Andi Polisky/Lianne Bryson won the 55s; Ketchum/Thompson won the 60s in a round robin; Duckering/Niosi won the 70 doubles; Margaret Anderson/Joyce Jones won the 75 doubles. The long doubles match caused me to miss my flight (that and the fact that some of the singles matches went long, so we started late), so I rebooked on a 9:30 SW flight...when was delayed till after 11pm...a long day but a fun one. This is a really nice event, lots of amenities for the players, and a beautiful settting.

    Portland, Oregon Nike Senior

    View Album
The Nike Senior Championships are taking place now in Portland, Oregon. The weather is gorgeous, 90s and the sky is so blue and clear, very nice for those of us from California who have been breathing smoke for days and having 110 degree temps.

There are quite a few national players here...Chrissy Costmagna Manola Colter, Kristen Hartley and Rebecca Stapp in the 40s, Tracy Houk, Fran Chandler, Kathy Vick (recovered from her broken foot) and Jeanne Hulsen in the 45s, Carolyn Nichols & Bonnie Tetrick in the 50s, Chieko Holt in the 55s, Lianne Bryson and Andi Polisky in doubles along with Jeannie Haskell/Karen Burns in doubles; Joyce Jones, Wendy Walter and Gloria Carter in the 65s, Greta Watson in the 60s and more, and lots of good doubles teams. There is a consolation in all divisions (FMLC) and a three/four playoff. This tournament is also the Oregon State Championships. This event is being played at the West Hills Swim and Racquet Club and the men's event is held at the Mountain Park RC nearby.

Kathy Vick and Fran Chandler played today and had lots of very long rallies, but Fran won the majority, winning 62 61 in a match that seemed closer than that score. Yesterday Jeannie Hulsen had a tough match with Tracy Houk, Houk winning 75 64 (rallying from 14 in the 2nd set).
