    Forest Hills, Saturday: More Rain!

Still sunny in California...not so sunny in NY where there was a big thunderstorm in the afternoon again which washed out some play.

In the 80s, Louise Russ...who may revising her opinion of grass being "for cows" won the 80 singles and doubles. In doubles it was her third national title this year with her childhood friend Doris Stephens. They were the only 2 girls on their high school tennis team, they became good friends, but Doris didn't play many senior nationals till this year...and the rest as they say is history.

In the 70s, the usual suspects are in the singles final, with Dori and Dorothy taking out the Lynns (Tietz and Little) who had upset the 3 and 4 seeds a day earlier. Norma Veal/Claudia Giacomini and Little/Matthiessen are in the doubles final.

In the 60s, yesterday Betty Wachob and Brenda Carter were upset by Judy Louie/Brenda Winstead in 3 sets but today Louie/Winstead lost to Molly Hahn/Heide Orth. They face Kathy Bennett/Martha Downing in the final.

Downing won her first grass court title and continued her stellar play in the 60s by beating Orth 63 61. Anne Guerrant beat Wachob in 3 sets to place third.

In the 50s, Tina Karwasky upset top seeded Susan Wright in the semis and took out Robin Harris in the final. Wright beat Tracey Thompson to place third. In doubles Wright/Tracy Worly and Harris/Thompson split sets and then it rained.

In the 40s, Amy Alcini/Joanne Russell continued their fine play, upsetting Julie Cass/Mary Dailey in three long sets to set up a repeat of the 40 clay court final against Erika Smith/Alissa Finerman.

In the 30s, Trish Riddell, like Karwasky, won her 2nd singles title in as many weeks, impressively beating Jenny Lee in straight sets. She combined with Lai to win the doubles.

    Forest Hills, Thursday

It rained again in NY. All the back draw matches today were played on clay.

In the 40s Julie Cass dominated Michelle Wright. Vesna McKenna was leading Amy Alcini 60 34, on serve when their match was suspended for the day due to rain as was all doubles.

In the 50s the top 4 seeds reached the semis, Wright, Harris, Thompson, Karwasky.

In the 60s Betty Wachob, a beautiful grass court player, beat her doubles partner, Brenda Carter 76 62 to reach the semis against Heide Orth. Orth had to go three sets to get past Molly Hahn. Anne Guerrant beat Judy Louie 76 62 and Martha Downing beat Pat Keleman 61 61.

In the 70s Lynn Little upset 8th seeded Burnett Herrick.

Hopefully it will dry up tomorrow...here in California in the Central Valley the weather is gorgeous.

Michelle Wright upset #4 seeded Carolyn Wei in 2 close sets today to reach the semis of the 40s.

Judy Louie edged #8 seeded Janet Watanabe in the 60 singles, continuing her comeback from a double knee replacement.

Meanwhile the 70s and 80s: no seeds have even been in action save the #4 doubles seeds, Langer/Tietz who won in straight sets.
