8月29日 Nichols Wins 80 Clay Court Singles/DoublesGraydon Nichols successfully defended his men's 80 singles/doubles titles today, but not without a big battle. He beat Jason Morton in the semis and Clem Hopp, who has had a terrific year to date, winning every other clay court match he's played in singles, including the European Championships. There was little between the two, the final score was 60 36 76(5). Hopp won their previous meeting this year, the hard court final. Hopp beat last year's finalist, Tony Franco, 61 75 in the semis. Franco won the bronze by default. Franco/Nichols, the 2006 world doubles champions, edged Hopp/Morton 26 64 64, rallying from 04 down in the third to win their third straight clay court doubles title in the 80s (and Nichols 11th straight 80s national title). In the 75s, John Powless/Dick Doss beat George McCabe/Jack Vredevelt 64 21 ret. inj. McCabe is scheduled to play Saul Snyder in the singles final tomorrow. (I don't know yet who was injured or what the injury was). Watanabe upset Molly Hahn in straight sets to reach the final. Pat Keleman beat Hahn to place third. Hahn combined with Mary Delay to win the doubles over SheilaJohnson/Ellen Goodman in a nail biter, 75 in the third. Ellen and Sheila edged Watanabe/Barbara Hubbard 76 in the third in the semis. Lianne Bryson/Sharon Greene beat Hubbard/Watanabe to place third. Carter also won the mixed, combining with Hugh Thomson to beat Brent Abel/Bryson handily in the final. Delay/Daub Ahmed took the bronze. Brian Cheney won the singles, barely getting by Thomson in the final, 76 in the third. Cheney had to go 3 sets to beat Abel in the semis. Abel took the bronze over Terry Ehlers. Cheney/Dan Bohannon beat Thomson/Kirk in three sets to win the doubles. Neal Newman/Jody Rush took the bronze. It was a good match, nearly 3 hours...but she played a few points better...76 75 was the score. We were able to play on clay which was a lot nicer than playing indoors (and waiting for hours for a court). Heide Orth won her 2nd straight 60s tournament, winning 60 64 in the final. Nora Blom from the Netherlands won the 55s. Zelinka and Olga Sharaposhinka (sp?) play the 40s final for the 2nd straight week...Olga edged her way past Ruppert while Zelinka ousted Worst. Bridget Harrer reached the doubles final with Bruggaber of Austria, and was getting ready to play Blom/Simons as I left. The day started really wet and drizzling and quite cold, 11 degrees Celsius (about 50). It turned into a pretty nice day and I posted photos of the lake Tegernsee from Gmund, at the top of the lake, along with a few tournament player photos. OK, that's it from Europe. I'm now in Munich and fly back to the US tomorrow. 8月15日 Rottach Friday IIII beT bruggaber 63 62 indoors. it was pretty fast but the ceiling was pretty high and the lighting adequate. I play Tomanova tomorrow. She dusted the top seed 61 60 (seeding is done on points only...doesn't work well in all cases. heide orth is in te 60 final and heidi eisterlener plays Nora Blom in the 55 final. Rottach Friday IIThe indoor courts in the "Tennis Halle" are carpeted with a little sand on top..fast but high ceiling and not too slippery. it rained more and now the outdoor courts are very wet. I play sometime after noon. 8月14日 rottach Friday morningas advertised it is raining..getting ready to practice indoors, but the clay courts are in remarkably good shape, so it may be possible to play outdoors later. German weather forecast...rain coming? Here's the Rottach weather forecast...sounds like an indoor tournament tomorrow...hope it's wrong. Detailed Local Forecast
Rottach, ThursdayIt was a really nice day today after heavy evening rains. I played my first match here against a German player from the Munich area. She hit the ball really hard and flat...definitely won the (20 min) warm up, but I was more consistent and won 60 60. I play the 4th seed tomorrow, an Austrian player, Bruggaber. She won 64 64 today. I watched Renata Tomanova play today against Simons, the woman I played in the Klosters final. She won 62 60 and in the 2nd set hit her stride, hitting big and accurate serves and huge forehands from different parts of the court. The first set Tomanova missed some, but she didn't miss much in the 2nd set. The weather is iffy tomorrow...we might have to play indoors. Catherine lost to a very tough player today from Germany, but played a competitive first set. She's booked on a flight now back to the US tomorrow morning. The 40s in Europe is definitely a really strong age division. I also watched Heide Orth play, she won easily in the 60s and plays I think the 2nd seed (if she won), Krupova. Heide had an easier time today than she did yesterday. I've posted the draws on the picasaweb site, or am trying to. I took photos of the draws yesterday and will try to do the same tomorrow of the 40-70, the rest are finished. I finally got on a faster internet connection (hard wired), and the photos seem to be slowly uploading from the Klosters final and from the boat trip we took yesterday and photos of the Rottach Club. There was a big Octoberfest type of event going on...well still going on, in Bad Wiessee tonight, there seemed to be lots of beer and now a lot of music and so on going on. We wandered into it tonight, and finally found out who buys all the traditional dress (lederhosen etc) shown in all the stores here. 8月13日 rottach WednesdayI play tomorrow at noon. I took photos of the draws but the internet connection here is too slow to upload them...I will do it Sunday or Monday. They re not online. Heide Orth won today and Bridgette Harrer lost. We took a nic boat trip on the Tegersee today. T was calm and beautiful. There was a lot of rain at night and again tonight but so far it has been ok during the day. More tomorrow after the matches. 8月12日 Germany TuesdayIt was another nice day in Germany with a thunderstorm in the afternoon. I bhit with Hede Orth early. She doesn't miss much, that's for sure. Catherine Taylor, Bridget Harrer and I practiced later too..Bridget plays tomorrow and Catherine and I play Thursday. The draws seem to change daily and I have not found them online yet. The lake here is beautiful...surrounded by mountains that become ski slopes in winter. 8月11日 Germany MondayI am in Germany now near the Tegernsee in Bad Wiessee. It is near Munich. I am playing in the German Senior tournament which is also a grade one ITF tournament. I play Thursday. I am the #2 seed and Austrian Julia Smutney is the top seed, but the player to beat is Renata Tomanova who is thus far in Smutny's half. However one person seems to have been omitted from the draw who would be seeded...hopefully tomanova will stay in the top half. 8月10日 Klosters SundayInternet access wasn't available yesterday or today so this is from my phone. I won the 50 singles beating the #3 seed Gomis from Spain in the semis and unsseeded Simons from Netherlands in the final (61 61). Part time Floridian Julian Link won the 35 singles. I am in Germany now for the Rottach tournament, the German Senior Championships. Zelinka won women's 40s in Switzerland. I will try to post photos and mare detail tomorrow. 8月8日 Klosters FridayI play Gomis from Spain tomorrow. Catherine Taylor from the USA played really terrific players today and in dbls but had great points and rallies. She plays 35 singles tomorrow. Things needed for this tournament: an umbrella, a raincoat and synthetic strings! My strings are gut and have been dissolving as we have been playing in heavy rain at times. klosters FridayI won my singles over Liz Vlotman from So Africa an d Gr Britain..but she lives in Dubai. We started the dbls but it rained and it was finally called around 9pm. we lost the 1st set. 8月6日 Klosters WednesdayIt was another beautiful day here in Klosters...well at least till about 6pm when there was a thunder, lightening and rain storm, but it ended before dusk. We thought we'd play tomorrow, so "only" practiced a couple of hours today. I got to hit with one of the Aussie Dubler Cup members, Vladimir, which was good practice. We watched some tennis in the afternoon and saw Clem Hopp win his umpteenth clay court title of the year (he said he's yet to lose a set on clay this year, he's very confident...) He won 61 63 and outplayed his opponent from Italy, but there were good points. Heide Orth reached the 60s final easily. Birukova won her round robin match as did Nora Blom, in the 55s. Since they started play in the 50s today, I thought I'd play tomorrow, but it appears that I will not play till Friday in singles. 8月5日 Klosters TuesdayHi again from Klosters. It was so foggy hitting today that I couldn't see the racquet of the player on the other half of the court...then it started drizzling. My gut strings started to disintegrate, so I stopped after only one hour, but I had been hitting with Janie Birukova and we only needed one ball for our session (except that it got so wet and orange that it was hard to see.) Heide Orth won today, and Nanda Fischer, who managed to beat Tinelli, rallying from 36 25 to win 11 of the last 12 games, lost the first set today 76 (9) and retired. Clem Hopp reached the semis of the 80s. We went to Davos today, walked from Davos Dorf to Davos Platz. It's a much bigger city than Klosters, but not as picturesque. However it has a lovely lake. We took the red train, and the scenery between Klosters and Davos is fantastic. One more day of practice tomorrow, then we play on Thursday. The 50s starts tomorrow. More photos posted. 8月4日 Klosters, MondayHello from Klosters again. Today was a big practice day, morning and afternoon practices on the hotel courts. We hit the Coop in between to get the fantastic berries they have here, they taste like they were picked just minutes before the store opened, perfectly ripe...and of course bread and cheese, we have to support those happy Swiss cows we saw yesterday in the mountains. I was sore today, who knew walking downhill (it was slippery) could be so tough. We did walk about 1000 meters downhill though. I watched a bit at the club today. Nanda Fischer and Maria Luisa Tinelli, both of whom play some US tournaments were involved in a marathon first round in the women's 65s. Tinelli won the first set and led 52 in the 2nd, Fischer rallied to win the 2nd set and it was 2-1 for Fischer when I left, that game was lasting 10-15 minutes already. Practice tomorrow with Catherine, Birukova and an Aussie who is a transplanted Russian, (not sequentially!)...play begins Thursday in the 50s. The weather has been ranging from ok to spectacular. I’m here for the Swiss Senior Championships. There are 6 red clay courts in Klosters. We hit yesterday and finished just before the skies opened up…lots of “Donner und Blitzen” (thunder and lightening). I drove from Zurich to Klosters yesterday, which was a big Swiss holiday, something like the 4th of July in the US. The car I rented was supposed to be a VW Golf, a small car, but instead it turned out to be a big SUV (aka “the Hulk…lots of fun parking here), but does have navigation…miss Bossy in German. Sunday Aug 3: Hello again. Saturday was a big practice day, Catherine Taylor from the US and I played for three hours, last day practice courts were readily available. We also hit the “Coop” market along with most of Klosters or so it seems. The chocolates are of course great but so is the fruit, really great berries. We also tried out the local transportation, successfully making it by bus to Klosters but walked back. The weather was gorgeous after a huge thunder and lightning storm with a lot of rain on Friday night, also a lot of fireworks on the national holiday. Today we hit early (only an hour today), then took the gondola up about 3000 feet. The views were spectacular, hard to take a bad photo here. We hiked over to another ski lift then walked down, about three hours or so altogether. We saw a lot of cows and their bells ringing was really pretty and peaceful. We saw only a few hikers on the way down, but a lot of mountain bikers. This apparently is a biking mecca as well as a hiking mecca, there are hundreds of well-marked trails. The wildflowers are beautiful too. It’s just a beautiful area and so very green. When we got back to Klosters we headed over to the tennis club and ran into Janie Birukova who used to live in Ft Lauderdale part time and also Ms. Tinelli who has a place now at the Tennis Club. It was really nice to catch up with Janie, who is here with her dog Benny (who was napping at the hotel at the time).
