9月29日 Mary Boswell Completes First Singles Gold Slam; Wins Doubles Gold Slam with Louise RussCongratulations to Mary Boswell for completing a DOUBLE GOLD SLAM at the 75 Hard Courts. It was her first ever singles gold slam...she won 3 of the 4 nationals in the 70s on more than one occasion though. Louise Russ won her 2nd doubles gold slam in the 75s, partnering Mary at all four 75 national events. Mary fittingly beat Louise to win the singles title in a hard fought 62 75 final match. Jane Lutz took the bronze and Lutz/Joyce Jones took the doubles bronze. The doubles finalists were Canby/Winans. Shelly Works, who enters the 45s next year, beat Shelly Stillman-Scott (who is already in that division) 62 75 to win the 35s gold. Carolyn Wei took the bronze with a three set win over Michelle King. Debbie Croft and Pam Cooke won the all-NorCal 35s doubles final over Carolyn Wei/Carmel Mary Hill 63 62. Lori Fahrenholz/Pam Dodman won the bronze. In the 45s, Mariana Hollman continued her stellar play, ousting last year's champion, Susan Wright 75 61. Fran Chandler beat Myke Loomis in three sets to take the bronze. Chandler/Vick won the doubles over Cooke/Croft. Wright/Loomis took the bronze in 3 sets over Stillman-Scott/Tracy Thompson. Martha Downing won the 55 singles title, beating second-seeded Ching Ling Chang 61 62, a reversal of the result of their last meeting, in March on clay. Downing said it was much closer than the score indicated and that she played aggressively throughout the match. Wilma Lee, who gave Downing a big scare in the semis, took the bronze with a straight set win over Carla Brown. Janet Watanabe finished 5th. Leslie Vallejo and Mary Harris, reunited after Harris had some injuries and surgery, beat last year's champions, Kathy Bennett/Kathy Barnes in a close three-setter to win the 55 doubles. Brown/Jan Kirkland-Cochran took the bronze over Downing/Chris Parker. Suella Steel continued her fine year, winning her third singles national and 4th doubles gold ball (all with Charleen Hillebrand). She and Charleen completed a gold slam for the 2nd straight year and she scored a straight set win over Hillebrand. Cathie Anderson beat her doubles partner, Sinclair Bill, in straight sets to finish third. Norma Veal/Claudia Giacomini won the bronze over Lurline Fujii/Jane Pang in straight sets. Lucy Dettmer won the 85 round robin to win the singles gold; Lucy and Dodo won the doubles gold too. For all results, click here. Previous Entries: Steel, Hillebrand Win Gold SlamChamisal, Thursday Afternoon; Getting to Know Cooke/CroftChamisal, Day 2 Chamisal Day One 9月27日 Steel, Hillebrand Win Gold SlamCharleen Hillebrand won their second straight Gold Slam today in Salinas, CA in 65 doubles. They beat the 2nd seeds, Cathie Anderson/Sinclair Bill 60 75. They dropped only one set in four nationals this year, (in the semis, to the third seeds, Veal/Giacomini). They face each other in the final tomorrow for the singles title.
Top seeded Kathy Vick/Fran Chandler took out surprise finalists Debbie Croft/Pam Cooke today 63 64 in the 45s final. to win their second national together. In singles Mariana Hollman, who upset Chandler in singles, takes on defending champion Susan Wright.
The top 2 seeds face off in the 55s doubles final, with Vallejo/Harris taking on defending champs Bennett/Barnes.
In the 35 doubles, two NorCal teams, neither seeded, will play for the gold tomorrow. Croft/Cooke take on Carolyn Wei/Carmel Mary Hill.
Nichols, Duesler, McCabe, Swetka and Tiberio Win Singles TitlesGraydon Nichols won the 80 singles and doubles for the third straight year at the clay courts, teaming with Tony Franco, his opponent in the final, to take the doubles. It was his first every National Clay Court singles title. Bob Duesler also won singles and doubles, at the 70 clay, teaming with Jim Nelson to take the doubles title. George McCabe won the 75 singles title and Chuck DeVoe/Jerry Thomas won the 75 doubles, also on the clay. At the 90 clay, Alex Swetka won the singles over Jack Morrison and teamed with Wade Macdonald to win the doubles. Henry Tiberio, unseeded, beat the 1, 2 and 3 seeds en route to the 85 singles title. Marvin Henderson/Bob Sherman took the 85 doubles gold. Chamisal, Thursday Afternoon; Getting to Know Cooke/CroftWell, Debbie Croft and Pam Cooke are in two finals, the 35 and 45 doubles, though unseeded. Both are from NorCal and Pam played on the NorCal intersectional team last year, and won 4 matches (2 singles, 2 doubles) at #1 and #2 doubles and #3 singles. She was a very good junior player (Pam Baughman) and played college ball in Tennessee. She has 3 kids, is married to Michael who is a good lefty and a NorCal volunteer. She also plays 5.0 league tennis. We have knock-down drag out singles matches when we play. Debbie Croft was an excellent junior player (Debbie Brink). She and her sister Janice played a lot of doubles as juniors...they hung back near the baseline and moonballed opponents to death, or so I've heard. I wasn't quite in their league, but I do remember Debbie playing singles and being VERY consistent. She now is a solid and aggressive doubles player...very few moonballs. She and Wilma Lee played at the Marin tournament and gave the top seeds, Chris Ramsower-Pearlstein and Robin Harris a scare before succumbing in three sets. Debbie also reached the semis a few years back in singles at the 40 hard courts. So there you have a little background on the surprise doubles team of the tournament! They are super nice people too and will be on the NorCal 45s team in Naples. Shelly Stillman-Scott, who is a Chamisal member, upset the #1 seed in the 35s, Carolyn Wei, today. Shelly is actually eligible for the 45s (she played 45 doubles), but chose to play 35s. (She's on our 45s intersectional team too.). She plays Shelly Works in the final. Shelly (eligible for the 45s next year...watch out) upset the #2 seed, Michelle King in the other semi. Mariana Hollman upset Fran Chandler today and faces Susan Wright in the final. Ching Ling Chang eased into the 55s final with a straight set win over Carla Brown 61 75. Top-seeded Martha Downing reached the final after a LONG battle with Wilma Lee. This was their 3rd meeting this year, but the first that went the distance. The top 4 seeds reached the doubles semis, played later today. The 65s went according to form...Hillebrand/Steel reached their 8th straight 65s national final, edging the 3rd seeds, Veal/Giacomini 36 75 64, and Anderson/Billbeat Pang/Fujii for the 3rd time this year. Hillebrand/Steel are going for a Gold Slam in doubles...they haven't dropped a set all year to Anderson/Bill (having beaten them twice). Hillebrand/Steel also face each other for the 4th time this year. Steel won their previous 3 meetings at the 65 indoors and grass and 60 hard courts. Hillebrand is the defending champion at this event, having beaten Steel in the final last year. Mary Boswell will face her doubles partner, Louise Russ, in the 75s final. Boswell is going for her first ever singles Gold Slam in that match. She's beaten Russ three times this year. They are also going for a Gold Slam in 75 doubles. Lucy Dettmer is continuing her 85s domination whenever she shows up at an 85s event. Click here for all results. 9月25日 Chamisal, Day 2Day 2 at Chamisal saw no major upsets thus far. Suzi Crary continued her fine play with a 61 62 win over Nancy Garcia...she takes on 4th seeded Cathie Anderson next. And all four seeds in the 65 doubles are in the semis. Pam Cooke and Debbie Croft were the first to reach the semis of the 45 doubles. Seeds are in action in all divisions tomorrow. Suzi Crary is back playing a national after a long absence. She's in the 65s and in a minor upset beat Grace Woo first round.
In the 45s, the indoor winners, Kim Lackey/Lori Fahrenholz, seeded #2, lost to Pam Cooke/Debbie (Brink) Croft of NorCal 63 62. Pam and Debbie are a tough team, Pam's returns are deadly and Debbie closes well. They'll be in Naples in November. :-)
The 4th seeds, Shelly Stillman-Scott/Tracy Thompson edged Mariana Hollman, Judy Newman Rakela in three tough sets. Mariana and Tracy won the 45 grass in July.
