Heide OrthHonored as European Lifetime Senior Champion

From the Tennis Europe/Seniors Tennis Website:

European Lifetime Senior Champions

Four of Europe's most distinguished senior tennis players were honoured with the first European Lifetime Senior Champion awards at a special ceremony held during the 2008 Roland Garros championships.

The accolade recognises both longevity and achievements, and will be presented to an elite band of players who win at least five World Championship and ten European Championship singles titles during their Senior Circuit careers. Presenting the awards alongside Tennis Europe President Jacques Dupré, Senior Committee Chairman Philios Christodoulou said, "On behalf of Tennis Europe, I would like to express our sincere congratulations to the four champions selected to receive this unique and important recognition. Their names will be written down in history alongside all the other top athletes of the tennis world."

HEIDE ORTH

Heide Orth was born into a sporting family in Essen, Germany in 1942 and began to play tennis with her father at the age of 13. By 1960 she had become German junior champion, the first steps on a road to a career that would see her compete on the ladies circuit for many years, in which she was a regular participant in all four Grand Slams, the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open. Faithful to her home country, Heide played on the national Fed Cup team on fifteen occasions, and has also been a reliable club representative, playing for ETUF Essen, Blau-Weiss Berlin and Skiclub throughout the years. After marrying in 1965 and giving birth to her first son in 1970, Heide took a five year break from tennis before entering the senior circuit, in which she has become a consistently successful force, having accrued 11 Tennis Europe Player of the Year titles. Mrs. Orth was delighted to be amongst the winners, remarking, "I am not used to receiving such awards and attending these ceremonies, but this is a really great recognition for senior tennis." Chamisal, the (belated) end

Saturday the only final was the 35s doubles and Shelly Works/Pam Dodman "worked over" the #3 seeds, the ubiquitous (every time I looked they were playing another doubles match!) 63 64. Works kept Cooke/Croft off the net with her accurate backhands, and set up Dodman who finished things off well at the net. Stillman-Scott/Kerwin-Payne beat Alcini/Dailey for the bronze.

In singles though Diane Kakareka won her 45 consolation singles match against Kathy Vick (match time exceeded 3 hours and went to 75 in the third), she was nonetheless "vick-tomized) by Vick, as she was unable to play the next day and Vick/Fran Chandler beat Diane in the consolation doubles semis too. Chandler/Vick beat Tracey Thompson/Jane Robertson in the fic final to place 5th. Carolyn Nichols placed in singles, beating Judy Newman Rakela (who took out Kim Lackey and Mary Johnson), 75 62 in the consolation semis.

That's a wrap from Chamisal. Next blogs will be from Turkey starting around Oct 6th.

Chamisal Friday

The question of the day is what bug spray works on the flies that are pestering the players at Chamisal...answer seems to be Bugs 1, Bugspray, 0. But the tennis today took our minds off the irritating insects.

The scoreline was Shelly Works 12, Shelly Stillman-Scott 2 (60 62)...but the scoreline doesn't say that the match lasted two hours and was quite a battle. Works was just too consistent for the local favorite and won the lengthy rallies. Then it was on to Shelly vs Shelly part 2, doubles. This scoreline accurately reflected the closeness of the battle. Shelly Works and Pam Dodman were up a set and 41 against SSS and Anne Kerwin-Payne...when the hyphenated team rallied to force a third set. Works/Dodman were too consistent in the end and won the long battle 62 in the third. They play Pam Cooke/Debbie Croft who outsmarted Mary Dailey/Amy Alcini in three sets. Dailey/Alcini were up a set and 2-0 when Cooke/Croft caught on fire...they reeled off 12 of the next 15 games, winning 46 63 62. Alcini won the 3/4 playoff, beating Mai Ichikawa 62 62.

In the back draw of the 35s there was a huge battle between Chassion/Tracy and Carolyn Wei/Mai Ichikawa...Wei/Ichikawa led 53 in the third and had a match point but lost in a tiebreaker. C/T play Hartley/Hulsen for 5th tomorrow.

In the 45 singles final, Fran Chandler dropped the first 2 games of each set, but rallied to win the first set 76. The key seemed to be the 3-3 game which went on forever, Wright having been up 40-0 serving before Chandler rallied to deuce the game. There were mulitple deuces and ads, and Chandler finally broke. That didn't end the set but set the tone of long, grueling rallies. Chandler ended the first set with a lob winner and though she dropped the first 2 games of the 2nd set, she kept up her grinding consistency, winning the final 6 games. She's now won the clay, indoors and hard courts without dropping a set. Mariana Hollman won the 3/4 playoff over Tracey Thompson 63 61.

Injuries plagued the back draw today, with Erika Smith (glute strain) and Myke Loomis (hamstring strain) not able to finish their singles matches or play their doubles matches. Wright made up for her singles loss with a terrific doubles performance, combining with Hollman to beat Cooke/Croft 63 60.

Martha Downing played flawlessly all week, beating Chieko Holt for the 2nd time this year, and decisively 63 63, not an easy task. She said she countered well and played consistently to win. She and Cindy Leprevost were merciless in the doubles, winning 60 61 over last year's winners Mary Harris/Leslie Vallejo 60 61. They didn't let Harris/Vallejo have a lot of pace and brought them on low shots, making them hit up, and both Downing and Leprevost have terrific overheads. The 3/4 playoff in singles was won by Ruth Daub who found Priscilla Sisson's game to her liking, beating her 60 61. She added a bronze in doubles with Barbara Sasser, this year's grass court finalists, who edged Jan Kirkland-Cochran/Carla Brown 76 in the third.

Suella Steel defended her singles championship, beating Cathie Anderson 63 64. Anderson moved well, ending up on the stairs after one retrieval, but Steel was more aggressive and moved Anderson around too much in the end. However, Anderson and Sinclair Bill took the doubles with a tough three set win over Steel/Mary Delay. Bill took the bronze 63 60 over Nanda Fischer.

Mary Boswell won her third singles title of the year in the 75s, beating Anneke Balics 64 61 in the final.

Chamisal Thursday

First off, congratulations to Marge Kohler/Joyce Jones for winning the 75 doubles in a three set battle over Canby/Ray, the 2nd seeds. They played great all week.

In the 35s, the apparently ageless Shellys, Stillman-Scott and Works, both eligible for the 45s, are in the 35s final, Works beating Amy Alcini in 3 sets and SS beating Mai Ichikawa, also in 3 sets. Maybe though they saw Susan Wright play this week? After a tough opening round match with Kathy Vick, she's barely...ok, hasn't broken a sweat (she rarely does anyway), and beat up her doubles partner, Mariana Hollman 60 62...and she's 51...something in the water. She faces Fran Chandler who rallied in the 2nd set to beat Tracey Thompson 61 75...Thompson volleyed great and seems to love the low bounces at Chamisal. But Fran was too steady in the end and passed and hit some great serves at clutch times.

As for Susan...she's also in the doubles final, having beaten Kim Lackey/Kathy Chassion 61 64 while doubles specialists Debbie Croft/Pam Cooke rallied from 0-4 down in the third to beat Nichols/Smith 61 46 76.

Stillman-Scott and Anne Kerwin-Payne (also eligible for the 45s) reached the doubles semis with a tough 3 set win over Chassion/Tracy; Pam Dodman/Works upset the 3rd seeds, Ichikawa/Carolyn Wei, in 3 sets; Alcini/Mary Dailey beat Hartley/Hulsen and Cooke/Croft prevailed and play Alcini/Dailey tomorrow.

Martha Downing and Chieko Holt reached their appointed place in the final, Martha with a 61 63 win over Ruth Daub, who had a lot of great power shots, but not enough which landed in the singles court, and Holt rallied from a set down to put away Priscilla Sisson 62 in the third. Downing is also in the doubles final with Cindy Leprevost. The first time pairing beat Jan Kirkland-Cochran/Carla Brown 64 64. They face last year's champs, Mary Harris/Leslie Vallejo who beat Daub/Barb Sasser in straight sets.

Cathie Anderson and Suella Steel, almost neighbors down in the San Diego area, reached the final, dispatching Sinclair Bill (63 60) and Nanda Fischer (61 63) respectively. They are also going to face each other in the doubles final. Anderson/Bill dispatched Fujii/Willauer 61 60 and Steel/Delay beat Giacomini/Pang 61 61...they'll all be ready for the final tomorrow and rested.

Chamisal, Wednesday

There were upsets today...which was less windy than previous days but still chilly. (My hands have been numb for all my singles matches at the start).

The 35s finally began play, and the two seeds (both of whom could have played 35s), prevailed, Shelly Works and Shelly Stillman-Scott.

Three of the top 4 seeds won in the 45s, but Tracey Thompson rallied from 14 down in the third set to upset Myke Loomis. She faces Fran Chandler while Susan Wright plays her doubles partner, Mariana Hollman in a repeat of last year's final. Hollman had tough resistance from Judy Newman Rakela, winning 64 64, while Wright and Chandler cruised past Nichols and Smith respectively. In doubles though, Kim Lackey/Kathy Chamssion upended Loomis/Mary Dailey 63 63 and Nichols/Smith beat the defending champions, Chandler/Kathy Vick 60 63.

The top 4 seeds in the 55 singles advanced without problem...the top seed, Martha Downing, won without dropping a set (in singles or doubles). The top 4 seeds also advanced in doubles but the defending champs, Mary Harris/Leslie Vallejo had a tough 6475 win over Leslie Zauher and Anne Russ. They have another tough one tomorrow against Daub/Sasser.

In the 65s, Nanda Fischer continued her fine play, beating Lurline Fujii 61 62. She has a tough task in her next match, against Suella Steel, while doubles partners Cathie Anderson and Sinclair Bill play each other on the other side.

There were no upsets in the 75s in singles. That was not the case in doubles, as Marge Kohler a local player from Carmel, teamed with Joyce Jones to oust top seeds and defending champions Louise Russ/Mary Boswell 64 76...they rallied from 25 down in the 2nd set to win it with more aggressive play than their opponents.

There was a nice party tonight, great food courtesy of the sponsors Tanimura and Antle (www.taproduce.com)

Chamisal, Tuesday

Greetings from the Monterey Penninsula, one beautiful part of the world.

The 35/85 hard courts began today. There were 2 minor upsets in the 65s: Nanda Fischer beat Wende Walter in 2 close sets and plays Lurline Fujii next; and Terri Eggers, out for 8 months with rotator cuff issues, edged Gloria Carter in 3 sets. The top 4 seeds prevailed.

The match of the day in the 45s was Susan Wright and Kathy Vick. It was a very well played match, with unbelievably low, hard shots by both players. Vick approached the net more than ususal and had good success there but Wright hit some great hard flat winners on crucial points. Wright prevailed 75 63. Kim Lackey/Kathy Chassion upset the 6th seeds in doubles, Pam Dodman/Mary Johnson 63 62. They face Mary Dailey/Myke Loomis, 64 63 winners over Hartley/Hulsen. All other seeds prevailed.

The weather is very cool...foggy still mornings followed by windy sunny afternoons...typical coastal weather. The tournament is well run by the TD Scott Krueger and Lonnie Gibbs the referee and has an experienced crew of rovers.

Landauer, Cheney Score at Rockaway

Brian Cheney is one title away from a singles/doubles Gold Slam in the 60s. He beat his doubles partner, Bob Litwin in the grass final in three sets then combined with him to win the doubles over the Bohannon brothers 64 61. The champions had a tough three setter against Newman/Rush in the semis, winning 61 in the third. From Bob Litwin:

"Cheney was serving 3rd game 3rd set leading 40-0, I got back to break point and had 11 ads and he had 4 game points. He escaped but it was one of the best games either of us had ever played at such an important moment."

Phil Landauer had to overcome match points to put away Geoff Cykman in the semis of the 55 singles, winning 75 in the third, then went three sets again in winning the final over Tom Smith. Landauder also won the doubles, with Smith,  over Scott/Walther 76 76.

Franco/Nichols won the doubles in a repeat of the 80 clay court doubles final, over Hopp/Morton, but much less dramatically, 62 62, barely beating the tropical storm that swept through the NY area on Sept 6th.
